LORD OF THE LOST - Thornstar

SHANNON LANDERS

Lord Of The Lost are a symphonic dark metal band hailing from Hamburg who have just released their sixth studio album ‘Thornstar’. Founded in 2007 to signing a record deal with Napalm Records, LOTL have certainly come a long way in just over a decade. Down The Front Media caught up with π (guitar) to talk about ‘Thornstar’ and their upcoming Thornstar Tour.

π said the album is a very special one due to more input from the band and crew in the writing process, “In the past, the initial ideas came from Chris and other songwriters he is associated with, only to have the other band members join in along the process. In this case, we started out with turning our frustration from a cancelled US tour into a song writing camp/vacation in Mallorca. For 5 days we rented out a house and studio over there to write songs, lay down ideas and, to some extent, build upon those already. We got together in different groups every day, so everyone had the chance to write with each other and we found that this method worked brilliantly for us, as we left Mallorca with basically eighty percent of the entire album being already written by then.”

He spoke about how the ideas come together within the band, “Our ideas come from basically anything. Bands we like, books, movies, talks that we have with each other or other people or even historical events. So you could say really that anything inspires the ideas for song writing.”

‘Morgana’ was one of the songs they have recently released from the new album, “It is actually a pretty simple song, but certain tweaks in the arrangement and production give it a very special feeling, which ultimately results in an anthemic character. I remember listening to Gared and Chris laying down the main chords in which they built probably ninety percent of the song in 1 1/2 hours.” The song pretty much wrote itself explains π, and it is one of the strongest songs on the album because it represents the band’s current state, “It is melodic, aggressive in parts, is able to hit you hard, especially emotionally and is still very accessible.”

The music video they released for ‘Morgana’ includes a woman dressed in gold, she holds a glowing ball of light. There are contrasts between black and white themes in the performance the band make as they play in atmospheric smoke. The woman appears to go from being mystical to fierce. “Obviously, it is a performance video, but above all that, every aspect of the presentation is inspired by the character 'Morgana' and her role in the mythology of the G’hahyr. Being the all mother, she is welcoming those that have lived a humble and reasonable life, rising up to her realms, which can be compared to 'going to heaven', hence the line “will I meet Morgana soon?” To resemble her empire, we wanted the imagery of the video to be as infinite and minimalistic as possible. We are basically performing in the realms of Morgana.”

Lord Of The Lost have a second YouTube Channel called ‘TV of The Lost’ for the purpose of documenting their day to day life as a band that contains just over 350 episodes. Fans are always looking for a window into the lives of their favourite bands and this is perfect for them to connect on a regular basis, “We are letting the fans into our lives on tour, while showing a lot of private, funny, emotional and sometimes hectic moments. We love the feeling of knowing that we can give something special to the people, only by showing how we truly are, on our own and in contact with each other. Above that, it serves as a kind of video diary for us, which documents our life together.”

To celebrate the release of Thornstar, Lord of the Lost will be embarking on a world tour! They’ve already played Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Scandinavia, Russia, the UK, Italy, the US, Poland, Czech Republic, the Baltics, Netherlands and Belgium in the past, “This tour is the most expansive one in number of countries, that we will visit from fall 2018 to spring 2019. All in all, we will visit 13 countries on this tour, some of those named above actually. New countries will be Belarus, Ukraine, Malta and Spain. In addition, we are headlining the UK, France and all of the new countries I stated for the very first time.” Of all the places in the world, there must be one venue, one country that LOTL are really looking forward to playing, π commented, "I think I don’t have to stress that we are very excited to play for all the beautiful people in these countries! We really want to tour Asia and South America! Let’s see, what the future holds..."

Lord Of The Lost have released 10 albums & 4 EP’s, they have played many festivals including Wacken Open Air, played with the Zielona Gòra Symphony Orchestra and also signed with Napalm Records last year. Having a lot going on we all look back at key moments in our lives, π spoke about their highlights as a band "Quite a lot (of highlights), of course. I guess the biggest one for Chris, Gared and Class was the Gothic meets Klassik in 2013, if I’m not mistaken. I haven’t been in the band at that time, so I guess I’ll just say: THORNSTAR!"

Away from the life as a band member in Lord Of The Lost, you will find each member in their own realms of living. π gave an insight to their lives outside of the band, "Chris is a full time Songwriter and Producer at Chameleon Studios Hamburg and also a lecturer at SAE Institute Hamburg. Gared also produces music and often does jobs as a studio musician. Class is managing logistics at one of the biggest music stores in Germany, Nik is a drum teacher and I am an Audio Engineer, doing sound design, recordings and synchronization for audio books, series and documentaries."
