Arriving early so that we didn't miss anything we were a little taken aback by the set up here - Buck & Evans sound checking amidst a hen party finishing their meal and people already dancing to the music. A sound check that results in an applause is always a good indicator of good things to come. This was going to be a fun night.
With the pub filling up nicely, the support act hit the stage, local guitarist Chris King and his band, Hotel Radio. From the off it appeared that Chris was a bit like a rabbit caught in the headlights with sheer volume of people now filling the pub, but he soon settled into his stride and turned out a mix of tracks ranging from a couple of slower acoustically driven songs to others that had a lively county vibe and would have got any hoedown in full swing. The five piece outfit accepted their deserved applause with smiles that spoke volumes of how they felt.
The sold out and rammed pub were ready for Buck & Evans, opening up with the massive, blues driven riff of “Run Cold” we knew we were in for something special. From the fast paced blues rock opening “Slow Train” and “Going Home” they slowed things down and showed versatility taking things in a very soulful direction. The haunting clarity of Sally Evans vocals combined with Chris Buck’s masterful guitar work is outstanding. Bob (Drums) and Dominic (Bass) complete the lineup, and they lose themselves in the music that they so obviously love to play. They manage to make playing the complex music look so easy and the capacity audience were enthralled. The setlist was a mix of older tracks and some new tracks from their upcoming album, which Sally Evans admitted with a charismatic chuckle, have been reworked and could possibly be changed again.
I can’t speak highly enough about Chris’s talent. For a young man he is a superb guitarist. The way he plays, the tone - in fact everything about his guitar work is phenomenal. Speaking to them after the show, the new album is already underway. The target set through Pledgemusic campaign (https://www.pledgemusic.com/projects/buckandevans) has been reached and they're hoping for a release later in the year, or early in 2018. Check back with DTFM for more details when we have them.
