Big Day Productions had set up another great night of music in the Nation’s Capital and all the bands were from South Wales so we arrived early so that we didn’t miss a thing.

First up were THE GINGER LIZARDS a three piece southern blues rock band from West Wales. Speaking to the band before their set, this was only their 8th show. Their set was a lot of fun with both of the Martin’s taking turns on vocal duties. Reminiscent of early ZZ Top at times, their songs are infectious mixing up styles throughout their set - it’s not often you see a Cigar Box Guitar at Fuel with ‘Burning Desire’ having a definite Motörhead feel. These guys may not have played many shows but they certainly know how to start a party.

The Ginger Lizards are:

Martin Thomas - Guitar/Vocals

Martin Daniels - Bass/Vocals

Paul Daniels - Drums

Next up were PEARLER, this Swansea based band had my full attention when I caught sight of the set list, with track descriptions like ‘CHUG’, ‘SLUT’ and ‘BONG’. What was about to happen?? They stepped up the tempo of the night with their brand of heavy riff driven rock which takes you back to the hair metal days of the ‘80s. It’s not only the musicality of these guys that impresses but the banter between them and the audience, they drag you right in to the show. Wendel & Evs (Guitars) provide some brilliant riffs and solos, Freaky (Bass) and Gareth (Drums) power the solid rhythm section with amazing energy. Ploughing through 9 of their own compositions these guys are a band that I’d like to see again.

I don’t know what’s in the water in South Wales at the moment but with the amount of great bands coming through there must be something special, and BUFFALO SUMMER, the headline act of this evening, are one of the best. Already with two successful albums under their belt - the self titled ‘Buffalo Summer’ and ‘Second Sun’ there is plenty of material to fill a set. They have a third album in development and chose to include some of the new tracks as well.

‘Everyone’s Out For Number One’ is one of these new songs and has an almost angry vibe to it - it may be a statement from the band. Andrew’s sublime vocals and charming delivery, enchants the crowd, Jonny’s guitar work appears almost effortless whilst Darren’s enigmatic bass playing is a joy to watch. Gareth (Drums)  is a machine, not only providing Buffalo Summer with almost metronomic timing but also did the earlier set with Pearler.

After playing a couple of new tracks and a couple of older tracks, including my personal favourite of ‘Neverend’, Andrew basically threw the set list away and started taking requests from the audience, playing the Buffalo Summer tracks as requested. The large Fuel crowd were lapping this up, singing along and dancing away, interacting with the band between tracks and the smiles on the faces of the four band members indicated that they were having just as much fun. The night drew to a close with ‘A Horse Called Freedom’ with Andrew and the crowd sharing vocal duties during the chorus. The band wrapped up to rapturous applause.
