Another glorious evening in South Wales and The Patriot holds another great night of music ahead of us. As usual the crowd had grown out the outside terrace prior to kickoff.

First Up, Tight Muff, a local 2 piece band who are returning after a short hiatus.

Their music is original and isn’t subtle. They describe it as ‘extreme muffage’ - it’s an off the wall, punk edged style that sounds as though they don’t play the songs the same every time. They are definitely different, a unique sound, managing at times to merge the slow and distinctive sound of The Doors with the full on in your face style of the Sex Pistols in the same song, they definitely leave an impression. It was an eye opening, short set finishing with a cover of ‘Voodoo Chile’.

Pearler hit the stage and bring a meaty slab of riffy rock, starting off with ‘W.O.R.Z.E.L Chuggage’ and ‘Fortified’ from their debut mini album ‘Belter’.

For a small venue, the sound at The Patriot is excellent - it was a bit of a surprise, then when Phil, the sound engineer asks Wendel Kingpin (Guitars/Vocals) to turn his amp up, Kingping laughingly comments ‘There’s a first time for everything!’ - much to the audience’s amusement.

The banter between the band and audience that allows you to connect on another level,

asking the crowd to choose on how the next song should be titled ‘Dessert Sluts’ or ‘Desert Sluts’ and the Dessert option won. Last time we saw Pearler, ‘Desert’ won the popular vote.

Whilst their music can't always be described as family friendly, it is built on a solid rhythm section of Gareth Hunt (Drums) & Freaky (Bass), howling solos from Evs (Guitar) and the powerful vocals and solid rhythm guitar of Kingpin up front. Despite losing a string during their final song, Kingpin battles through and rounds off a great set in style.

After a bit of a longer break than normal to allow Gareth Hunt (Drums) to recover after his previous  set with Pearler, the packed Patriot was ready for the headline band - Buffalo Summer.

Starting with ‘A Horse Called Freedom’ from their self titled 2013 debut album they got the crowd singing the chorus from the start. Both band and crowd were well up for a night of great music from this well known local favourite.

The band mix up their set with songs from their debut and second album ‘Second Sun’ with a few songs from their forthcoming third record, which is still waiting for a release date. The crowd joined in on almost everyone of the songs making the evening feel as if it were just a group of friends jamming in a bar.

Buffalo Summers musical style change throughout the night, ‘Heartbreakin’ Floorshakin’’ with Darren King’s funk laden bassline, ‘Neverend’ a personal favourite of mine, with its swing type vibe. ‘Dark Valentine’ is a new song which slowed the pace substantially, and is an outstanding track.

Andrew Hunt (Vocals) has the style and confidence of a young Robert Plant. Combine this with Jonny William’s phenomenal guitar solos, and the solid rhythm section, these guys should be seen by everyone, and we are happy to see them on home ground on a Friday night.

The set came to a close way too soon for the band and crowd, and they gave in to pressure (and a later curfew) and played a couple more songs. As they finished, Andrew thanks Angela for her unwavering hospitality, for everyone for coming out and Tight Muff and Pearler for joining them, also thanking Down The Front Media for their continued support of new music.

As they get the nod for another song, they have a quick chat and decided to play ‘March of The Buffalo’ to the delight and adoration of the partying crowd.

Buffalo Summer are an incredible band, who in my opinion should be playing larger venues, more regularly. Their new material has the potential to be their best to date and we cant wait for its release as it needs to be heard by a wider audience.

Overall, it was yet another night of amazing music at The Patriot.
