There is a long association between KRAKOW and tonight’s co-headliners ENSLAVED. Both hailing from Bergen in Norway the two bands have toured together and collaborated in the studio. Tonight, KRAKOW are again supporting their fellow countrymen and their short set sets the scene for what is to follow. Their set, featuring numbers from their recently released  ‘Minus’ album received enthusiastic applause from the early arrivals at Manchester’s Academy 2.

Krakow are:

Frode Kilvik – Bass / Vocals

First of tonight's co-headliners are the American based HIGH ON FIRE.

Their one hour set draws from their extensive back catalogue and homes in their recently released eighth and highly acclaimed album 'Electric Messiah'

Front Man Matt Pike is a commanding figure on stage bare-chested and tattooed with a gravel-like voice that has often drawn comparisons to the late Lemmy.

There are some sound issues for the first couple of numbers which are soon overcome and the band get into their stride and deliver an ear-splitting set. Starting with ‘Black Plot’ from their 2015 ‘Luminiferous’ album and following on with ‘Fertile Green’ and ‘Rumors of War’ by which time the crowd were in headbanging heaven.

About a third of the way through, Pike announces that they are going to do some numbers off their new album as they launch into of ‘Steps of the Ziggurat’ and follow it up with ‘Spewn from the Earth’ both of which are received as eagerly as the older numbers. The title track of the new album ‘Electric Messiah” (a tribute to Lemmy) concludes the set in thunderous style and leaves the crowd shouting for more. This being a double headliner gig there are no encores tonight but the crowd have been on fire for the last hour and could have happily listened to this band all night.

‘Electric Messiah’ is available now.

The crowd seems to have thinned a little by the time ENSLAVED take to the stage but those that remain greet the Nordic band with whoops of enthusiasm. As they commence their set with ‘Roots of the Mountain’ from their 2012 album ‘RIITIIR’, the backdrop changes to blood red as the band become silhouettes against the backdrop and this is to be the theme for the next hour as the backlighting alternates from red to ice blue to white to reflect the mood of the various tracks.

Formed 27 years ago the band have seen many changes but Bjornson and Kiellson have been there since the beginning and from the offset are intent on ramping up the crowd.

The set continues with numbers from their back catalogue including ‘Havenless’ which Kiellson explains is the first time it’s been played in Manchester before moving on to ‘Sacred Horse’ and ‘Jotunblod’ which we are told translates into Giants Blood. This mix of Black Metal and Nordic folklore delivers a captivating set that ends with ‘Allfǫðr Oðinn’ from 1993’s EP ‘Hordanes Land’ and as with High ON FIRE leaves the audience once again shouting in vain for an encore.
