We were all set for another night of music in Clwb Ifor Bach in the heart of Cardiff’s vibrant music  scene. The venue was just opening as we arrived, and not many more people had turned up to see local band NOT SINCE THE ACCIDENT when they began their set. With their fast paced punk influenced music, the small audience were entertained as Rhys used the available space to wander round the small floor. Interchanging lead vocals between Rhys and Steve (guitar) giving a different sound as they played a variety of tracks from their EP ‘Paved With Gold’ to a slowly filling room.

They have a unique style which infuses a little reggae vibe into their punk style, which shouldn’t work, but yes, it does and we hear their talent clearly as they play some new material.

Not Since The Accident are:

Rhys - Vocals which is due to be recorded later this year.

Steve - Guitar/Vocals

Lewis - Drums

Iain - Bass/Vocals

Bristol based PHOXJAW up next and from the start of their first song they were clearly something different, sounding like a cross between ‘Piper At The Gates Of Dawn’ (Pink Floyd) and ‘The Black Album’ (Metallica). Their style is not going to suit everyone, but it certainly seemed to please the growing audience.

They are an expressive band shackled by the small stage who can’t be categorised into a genre as they blend so many into their unorthodox style. Their request to the lighting engineer to have only red light for their set added to the ambience and turned their set into a show. Their sound is bass heavy so that it is felt not just heard, and was thoroughly well received by the crowd.

First of tonight’s co-headliners FUNERAL SHAKES from Watford, take to the stage and hit the first notes when their gear fails. While Simon Barker works to recover his gear the rest of the band fill with humour and small jams. Calvin Roffey juggles himself between helping to fix the problem, and being apologetic to the audience, who don’t seem at all bothered by the delay.

After replacing guitar leads, the guitar is up and running again and their quick paced high energy set makes an immediate impact to the full room. In their ‘uniform’ of black and white shirts, they entertain us with tracks from their recently released album, even though they are plagued by more technical issues.

Built on a solid bottom line, intertwined with delegated guitar work and topped off with great vocal harmonies, Funeral Shakes are an infectious band that get the whole place bouncing. Catchy sound, charismatic front man and a fun band, reminiscent of the Ska 1980’s heyday.

Funeral Shakes are:

Simon Barker - Guitar

Calvin Roffey - Bass/Vocals

Lee Barratt - Drums

Em Foster        - Guitar

The final act of a packed bill are the second co-headliners FROWN UPON, again, from Cardiff, playing to a home crowd.

Opening their set with a series of deep repetitive notes they draw the crowd into their performance.  These are heavier and harder edged than Funeral Shakes, adding massive diversity to the co-headline show. They tell us all this is their first headline show, and this is greeted with cheering and applause from around the room.

Mid set, they switch to a slower, more melodic pace, demonstrating they’re great musicians but the thinning crowd show they are, unfortunately, unable to build on the party vibe from Funeral Shakes.

With the night drawing to a close, they thank everyone for coming out and for the previous bands for a great night as they pick up the pace again for their final 2 songs, before leaving the small stage.

Frown Upon are:

Zac Noneley - Vocals

Jon Wilson - Bass

Peter Smith - Guitar

Ollie Axon - Drums

James Biss - Guitar
