On another incredibly warm evening in the Welsh capital, the waiting crowd made use of the front bar and outside seating at Fuel Rock Club to suppress the heat.

Unfortunately, one of the original support acts, Savage Outlaw had to pull out due to injury and the call went out across social media for a replacement and at the eleven hour, in stepped Bad Earth who made the 4 hour dash from North Wales to fill the slot.

First up tonight were Cardiff based four piece Ravenbreed for their eleventh show since they formed earlier this year. Playing tracks from their 3 track EP ‘Hallowed’, and mixing it up with some new material Warren Allen (Vocals) joked with the audience who were really enjoying the show.

Ravenbreed may have played less than a dozen shows but they’re a tight outfit, with thunderous drumming to the point where Watkins broke his Hi-Hat, gut churning bass, soaring guitar breaks and powerful vocals. Their skill and talent is well worth a slot higher up the running order and pitched well against the headliners for ‘band of the night’. These guys have massive potential and there is something special about them and I urge you to check them out.

Because of the short notice and long drive, Bad Earth arrived just a short time before doors after their mercy dash from North Wales, after a brief kit change over they hit the stage at a hundred miles an hour. Their riff heavy, race paced style raised the temperature a few more degrees playing their own material. The banter between Stephen Coxon (Vocals/Guitar) and the other bands on the bill filled the venue with laughter between songs, these guys clearly enjoy being on stage and the opportunity to play Cardiff for the first time.

Thinking that they’d come to the end of their set the soundman told Bad Earth they still had 15 mins left, with a clear look of shock on their faces they added a couple of extra songs to their set. In the first of these added tracks Coxon’s guitar string broke mid song and while he did a quick re-string, Stefen and Murray threw in an impromptu funk bass and drum fill jam session. Bad Earth are a band I hope to catch again soon.

The final band of the night are the headliners Häxan, this South Wales based three piece band step onto the stage, pick up their gear and just launch into their set. Small in stature these ladies punch well above their weight, playing songs from their 2016 EP ‘Breaking Down The Walls’, they opened up with ‘Back To My Place’. Sam is not afraid of taking the micky out of herself between tracks and laughingly returned the banter that the previous bands had dished out.

Their fast paced set of original material was infectious and seemed to cause the temperature in Fuel to rise by a few more degrees. Unfortunately, their set came to an end way too soon with a cover of Led Zeppelin’s ‘Rock and Roll’, the crowd appeared to have loved what they’d seen but seemed to want a little more from the great headline act.

Speaking to Sam after the show she talked about having some new material and they will add it to the set next time they headline, which I can’t wait for. Häxan open up an awesome line up in November at The CoMUNIon of Rock festival in November.

Häxan are:

Sam Bolderson - Vocals/Guitar

Charlotte Bolderson - Drums

Harriet Wadeson - Bass
