HRH SLEAZE II - 01.09.18 (Day One Highlights)

MARIA GLOVER

Day 1 highlights:

Stage 1

Until they speak I'm convinced MIDNITE CITY are American - the look, the style all screams the hair rock of Motley Crue or Poison to me. They are actually a new band, formed last year, from Nottingham, just down the road, fronted by Tigertailz' Rob Wylde.

The vocals are incredibly melodic and timeless, the songs infectious and the guitars just the right shade of classic/AOR rock. 'We Belong To You' is a great choice for the set, an obvious anthem for the band and vintage 80s/90s. The crowd are all up and dancing, the band clearly enjoying every second on the main stage opening Day 1 of HRH Sleaze 2018. The band are tight and polished and seem like they've been together much longer, giving a deliciously sleazy show bursting with melody, riffs and the obligatory powerballad 'Everything You Mean To Me'. I'm impressed with the sound, the performance and the quality of the songs.

WILDHEART are a Belgium 80s-styled glam rock band with screaming guitars, cool riffs and catchy choruses. The set includes 'On My Way' and 'Never Let Go' from the self-titled debut album, and new song 'Strangers'. They look and sound the part, not necessarily innovative but certainly entertaining.

JETBOY join HRH Sleaze as part of their 'Born To Fly' tour, the new album out January 2019. Founded in 1983 by guitarists Billy Rowe and Fernie Rod, JETBOY are recognized as one of the perfecters of glam rock. They pound out a packed set to the auditorium, all eyes and ears focused on the stage as they rip through 'Evil', 'Heavy Chevy' and new tracks 'Party Time' and 'Born To Fly'.

This is their first time in the UK and they are immensely grateful to be here and impressed to see so many rock dudes in one place. The chugging bassline and repetitive riffs compliment the deep vocals, and the harmonica is the cherry on the top.

Setlist:

L A GUNS are Day 1's headliners, sleaze veterans who continue to rock the f*** out. I've always loved this band, though I was gutted when they parted ways with Michael Grant, and I enjoy a set which spans their illustrious career. L.A. Guns are a hard rock band from LA formed in 1987, with a complex history and numerous lineup changes. Tracii Guns left the original band to merge with fellow Los Angeles group Hollywood Rose to form Guns N' Roses. L.A. Guns was reformed, going on to achieve some chart success and, after more than a decade apart, Tracii Guns and Phil Lewis were reunited in the band last year.  They are currently touring the UK.

Stage 2

THE IDOL DEAD open stage 2 and I had totally forgotten just how badass they are; they rocked that stage! From Leeds, the band describe themselves aptly as "a ten legged, riff-hungry entertainment machine – with songs catchier than Ebola and melodies sweeter than sugar-dipped strawberries. 5 men hell bent on entertaining and making the music they love". The room is packed full to bursting at 2pm and the band's immense combined personality fills the stage. The bass reverbs through my feet and the vocals are superb. Despite the late night closing Highway To Hell IX the previous night, the band look and sound great and there is a lot of love in the crowd for their third performance in 24 hours.

'Infected' bolts straight out of the gates of Hell, the band on fire and their performance seemingly effortless. They throw a few random songs into the set, not on the set list, and this only adds to the entertainment. The crowd are in fine voice too, singing along to almost every track as they belt out 'We Love The Bones Of You' and close a crazy set with 'I.D.O.L.' A fittingly sleazy opener that I didn’t want to end.

PSYCHOBABYLON are another Leeds band, this one heavier and with a hint of metalcore growl interspersed throughout their set. The drums are colossal, the bassline in my throat and some addictively sexy riffs surround me as they power through a hardcore set including 'Dynamo', 'Angels' and 'Love And War', and a cover of Transvision Vamp's 'I Don't Care'. They treat us to a song from their upcoming album, 'Means Of Escape', all high octane and fast and furious. Great set boys, and a very sweaty audience.

THE SENTON BOMBS are a rock band from Blackpool and are regulars on the live circuit, often on the same bill as some of the bands here on stage 2 today. There is a packed party atmosphere for their set which is filled to the brim with prime sleazy sounding rock, akin to early GnR era. 'Train Wreck', from their fourth album 'Mass Vendetta', is rhythmic and gritty - a great and appropriate name for a riotous song. 'Nothing Quite Like This' is catchy as f*** with a rumbling bass and lush guitar solo. I hadn't seen these guys before but I will see them again.

SPEED STROKE are an Italian rock band who got together in 2010 and released their second album, 'Fury', in March 2016. Their album is chock full of great modern sleaze tracks and a stand out in today's performance for me is 'Believe In Me', the third single from the album. They rock out so hard they break the drum panel! The performance is sexual and the music a great set of bangin’ sleaze.

COYOTE MAD SEEDS close stage 2 on Day 1 and are one of my absolute highlights from the weekend. I last saw this Sheffield band some 3 years ago and my how they've grown in that time! They have a huge sound and some seriously stunning shredding.

'Don't Wanna Be You' has that southern twang that I love, punchy drums and growling bass. I'm not sure where the singer and guitarist gets his strength from as he's so skinny but man he has a powerful and soulful voice and can play the life out of that guitar. Their all-too-short set features 'A Reason To Live', the explicit 'Luck Is For Losers', 'Shock' and closes with 'Get Out Of My Way', by which time I'm a lifelong fan with plans to get the t-shirt! They have a unique sound, one I would describe as bluesy or southern rock more than sleaze, and bring the house down, the singer/guitarist entering the audience and accepting drinks from strangers as he lays down riffs. Perfection.
