A perfect way to round off the week was a date with the lovely guys from DOBERMANN and KEE MARCELLO BAND.

I’d checked out Turin band DOBERMANN on YouTube prior to the gig and was very much looking forward to hearing them play live.

The band fronted by singer /bass player Paul Del Bello, with guitarist Valerio Mohicano Ricciardi and drummer Antonio Burzotta have released 3 albums and an EP in 6 years and played a good mix of songs from them all including their new album ‘Pure Breed’.  I love the sound they have, just 3 of them creating a full sound, classic sounding riffs, a fierce bass line and a flare to the drumming that carried the sound to the back of the room.  A clever move by the guys was to throw in a few cover versions which kept the crowd with them throughout.

Great to watch and even better to listen to live.

A crowd had gathered for KEE MARCELLO BAND, thin in number but enough for there to be a nice atmosphere in the room.  This was certainly going to be an intimate gig!

MARCELLO is a fabulous songwriter and guitarist. Without seeing him live you perhaps forget, but within minutes of the set beginning, it becomes crystal clear that he still has the nimbleness and the passion for playing that he is known for.

It is 30 years since the release of ‘Out Of This World’ the Europe album MARCELLO first played on when he joined the band in 1986 (until 1992)  and the album is the name and partial focus of this tour. His latest album release ‘Scaling Up’ providing another focus to the songs and actually listening to the old songs and the new ones side by side, the Europe vibe is audible but there also seem to be a sleazier, rock edge and hardness to them, more evolved if you like.

A good mix on the set list encompassing some of the more memorable and newer tracks including ‘Ready or Not’,  ‘Let The Good Times Rock’, ‘Girl From Lebanon’, Sign Of The Times’, a very lovely ‘Carrie’ which demonstrated the vocals of the 3 backing singers admirably , fabulous vocals  blended in perfect harmony.  PO Nilsson on keyboards has an ease to his playing as he fills out the sound and is entertaining to watch, Tim Brown on drums is a mountain of a drummer, hard-hitting but with some serious swagger plus that voice!  What can you say about Ken Sandin? One of the most solid bass-players in rock.  He has so much groove to his playing it gives the songs additional life, a pulse to the accompanying heartbeat from the drums.  More cracking tunes with ‘Fix Me’ and ‘Don’t Miss You Much’ from ‘Scaling Up’ which delighted the crowd, the seemingly effortless guitar wizardry flooding out of the amps in swooping and soaring style.

MARCELLO chats easily between songs, the history behind them, funny anecdotes (not all reportable) and generally seemingly comfortable with the small crowd.

Hearing these songs played with such dexterity is a sight and sound to behold.  A riveting performance, MARCELLO grabs you in, holds you hostage throughout each song, each solo breath-taking and perfect.  Such a gifted guitarist and one who you really should check out.  His love of what he does shines through his performance as he appears to get lost in the music.  His relationship and admiration for his band is palpable, each of them sparring easily off each other and enjoying themselves on stage. The highlights of the setlist for many judging by the reaction in the room were ‘Superstitious’ and of course ‘The Final Countdown’ however, I really enjoyed hearing the newer material.  Lots of love in the room for these guys and another great night at Eleven.
