King Tuts is an iconic venue, not only in Glasgow or Scotland but the UK as a whole. It has hosted many new and emerging bands at the start of their careers such as Oasis and The Killers to name a couple.

Tonight, it plays host to The Kris Barras Band, fronted by, as the name suggests Kris Barras. Barras is the former MMA fighter who has lived, worked and fought in Las Vegas and Thailand and was voted one of the best 13 Blues Guitarists in the world in 2017.

Opening tonight are Edinburgh based band Black Cat Bone who describe themselves as Alternative Blues Rock. They take to the stage with opener ‘Morning Light’ which sees bassist Ewan MacKenna crank it up using a bow on his instrument which immediately gets the already full venue's audience on side. ‘Punks & Pushers’ and ‘Freak Machine’ follow with some amazing vocals and harmonica playing from Ross Craig. ‘Get Your Kicks’ sees a return of the bow to the bass from MacKenna and he is joined by some slow and easy guitar playing from Luis Del Castillo, in what is my standout track of the night from the band. The crowd have also loved this track judging by the applause it received. The quartet is completed by drummer Kai Wallace whose steady beat throughout the night completes this unique bands blues-rock sound.

‘Coming For You’ is a new song which closes tonights set and is an absolute belter which whets the appetite for future releases. A great set from a fabulous band who I urge you to go and see next time out at The Voodoo Rooms in Edinburgh on 27th October, and there is a good chance I will see you there.

Tonights headliner is Kris Barras and his band, the crowd eagerly await his arrival and as the lights dim the theme music for The Good, The Bad and The Ugly fills the PA system and at its conclusion the band take to the stage. Kris Barras, resplendent in waistcoat and tattoos, takes front stage whilst the rest of his band, bassist Elliott Blackler, drummer Will Beavis and keyboardist Josiah J Manning, take up their posts.

Opening track ‘Heart on your sleeve’ sets the tone for the night and second up ‘Kick Me Down’, the opening track from new album ‘The Divine and Dirty’, prompts the crowd to singalong word perfect. ‘Stitch me up’ and ‘Blood on your hands’ keep the tempo up and there really is no superlative to describe how good this band really are. Barras’ voice has an amazing range of style and reminds me fairly often of Jon Bon Jovi in his heyday. A new song ‘Way To Go’ is played with Barras explaining that it should be on a new album which may be recorded over the Christmas and New Year period as this is the only time in the next 12 months they won’t be touring.

A first class cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s ‘Fortunate Son’ follows and, although this song is becoming a favourite of many a band to cover, this really was one of the best I have ever heard being sung. ‘Propane’ and ‘Hail Mary’, both from the new album follow, and the latter is already a crowd favourite and rapidly becoming mine also. ‘Small Town Blues’ is followed by Beavis behind the drum kit being allowed to showboat his talents with a solo spot which is received well by the crowd.

‘Watching Over Me’ which Barras states was the first song he wrote on the passing of his father to cancer a few years ago has the crowd intently fixed on him listening to the heartfelt lyrics of his sadness at the time. Last song of the set is ‘Lovers or Losers’, another where every single word is sung back to the band. The band leave the stage to a deafening ovation and it’s not long before they are back with encore track ‘Rock n Roll Running Through My Veins’.

An amazing night listening to an amazing group of musicians led by Kris Barras who isn’t one to blow his own trumpet but he has an fantastic future in front of him if he keeps up the quality of songwriting he has shown tonight. One word sums tonight up WOW!
