A packed Fuel Rock Club waited patiently for the first band of the night to take the stage and that was Blackwater Conspiracy from Northern Ireland, a five piece band formed in 2015.

This being their first show in Cardiff they opened up with ‘Roll The Dice’ from their 2017 album ‘Shootin’ The Breeze’. Instantly engaging with their new Cardiff friends, the bands very cool blues sound, a sort of cross between the Black Crowes and The Quireboys, got feet tapping and hips moving from the start. The mix between guitar, keys and vocals is amazing all built on a solid foundation from the rhythm section as they moved from one great song to another.

The chemistry on stage is palpable and they clearly enjoyed every minute of their set. Phil explained  they had to leave for the ferry very shortly after leaving the stage, and they only had a few items of merch left. To the crowds delight, they rounded off a superb start to the night with ‘85 Rockstar’ -  which is currently play listed on Planet Rock.

Thanking the Cardiff audience for coming out early to catch them they took a little time to chat as they packed their kit away and heading off back home. A band I highly recommend that you check out.

After a short break The Kris Barras Band took their places and launched into the opening track  ‘Wrong Place, Wrong Time’ with its no nonsense blues the crowd sensing that something special was about to happen in Cardiff.

‘I Got Time’ from the 2016 release ‘Lucky 13’ with its sweet groove got the crowd moving. ‘Stormy Monday’, a song that Kris explains, played by Gary Moore, has been one of his major influences, Kris’s sublime guitar work interweaves with the delightful keyboards and sensitive percussion and a bass line which slows things down a little and allows you time to reflect on the bands influences.

The pace is lifted by ‘Propane’ a track from the latest album ‘The Divine and Dirty’ followed by ‘Hail Mary’ which was sung back at the band from the very start, this is one hell of a live track it’s a stadium rouser. ‘I’m Gone’ and ‘Heart On Your Sleeve’ brings a southern feel to the set with it’s brilliant use of the slide guitar. ‘Kick Me Down’ got the crowd singing again, first joining in and then taking over vocal duties during the chorus before the keyboard led ‘Stitch Me Up’ got the crowd moving again, with its uplifting pace and composition.

Kris dedicated the next track to the memory of his father, without whom Kris wouldn’t have picked up a guitar at the age of 5 and from my point of view that would have been a great loss to music, ‘Watching Over Me’ is a beautiful tribute lyrically and played with noticeable emotion. Kris takes the last break to thank the crowd for coming out to his first show in Cardiff, in fact, it’s his first show in Wales and he said it won’t be his last. The crowd applaud and the band strike up for their final track, a cover of Jimi Hendrix ‘All Along The Watch Tower’ with it having the Kris Barras Band treatment, to tinker with this classic takes big kahunas and they pulled it off wonderfully, the arrangement with keys and Kris’s guitar and vocals was phenomenal. The Cardiff crowd went wild, if a standing audience could give a standing ovation the band would have had one at the end of sensational performance. Kris thanked everyone once again as he headed to the merchandise stall to spend time with the crowd.

I can’t stress how good this band is, Kris Barras is going to be filling arenas before long so get out and catch him in an intimate show soon. Another must see band.
