MAGNUM hit the road in support of their 20th Studio Album, ‘Lost on The Road To Eternity’ and tonight was Cardiff’s turn for the 2nd show of their 2018 tour schedule. As always, Magnum manage to attract a large crowd of all ages, demonstrating why they’re still one of the UK’s favourite bands.

The support for the show was provided by REBECCA DOWNES, who from the very opening blues riff caught the Magnum faithful’s attention. Her powerful and soulful vocals complemented by the well crafted music from the tight band behind her engaged with the fair crowd that had arrived early to see them.

Rebecca covered a range of tracks from her EP ‘Real Life’ and albums ‘Back to the Start’ and ‘Believe’ in her short set, leaving the Cardiff crowd wanting more.

During the short interval the anticipation was building. As a lifelong Magnum fan I had a few questions running through my head - how would the line up changes affect the band? and with Bob Catley not getting any younger how would his voice hold up?

With a delicate keyboard introduction from Rick Benton, the remainder of the band take their places and they launch into ‘When We Were Younger’ taken from the 2007 Album ‘Princess Alice and the Broken Arrow’ with the band dismissing all my doubts in the first couple of minutes. The band are as tight as ever and Bob’s vocals are as good as ever, maybe a little added depth due to the length of his career.

Directing the Cardiff crowd like a conductor to his orchestra, Bob Catley has them in the palm of his hand and they’re in fine voice. ‘Sacred Blood “Divine” Lies’ followed, continuing the high tempo sing along tunes, then they take it down a step to play the title track of their most recent album ‘Lost on The Road To Eternity’. The keyboard introduction was spine tingling, with the entire crowd in an almost trance like state until the track opens up, Al Barrow and Lee Morris driving the track along with power and grace and Tony Clarkin adding the solid and at the same time intricate guitar work that is the heart of Magnum.

With the intro groove of ‘Without Love’ Bob asks the Cardiff audience to dance and they oblige. The set list was an almost perfect mix of tracks, ranging over a 40 plus year career. The old favourites like ‘How Far Jerusalem’ and ‘Les Morts Dansants’ had the crowd singing their hearts out. Tony’s solos were absolutely sublime and with Bob acting out every line and verse as with all of the passion and commitment that he’s always put into a show. With ‘All England’s Eyes’ and ‘Vigilante’ the band had Cardiff under a spell, Bob could have just stood there and directed them to sing the rest of the night.

The next track was a complete curve ball and I haven’t heard it live for many a year, the unmistakable introduction to ‘Don’t Wake The Lion (Too Old to Die Young)’ many of the crowd seemed to question whether they were hearing correctly, really ‘Don’t Wake The Lion’? With it sinking in the crowd stepped it up another level.

With the band taking a quick break at the end of the set, the crowd chanted ‘Magnum’ until they reappeared for a 2 track encore, ‘The Spirit’, the haunting beautiful timeless classic and then the crowd start clapping for ‘When The World Comes Down’ before Bob starts singing. Bob thanks the Cardiff faithful for coming out and introduces the band to massive applause. Once again Magnum show why they are still on top of their game after 40 years, they have adapted to the changes that happen over such a long period and are just superb.
