The smaller of the two rooms in Hull’s Welly Club may seem an odd place to house a seven-piece prog rock band, though there is a decent crowd filling the room almost an hour before anyone takes to the stage.
The stage is well stocked with the band’s equipment, including two rather impressive keyboard setups alongside the usual drums and guitars, leaving little room to spare.
With no announcement or fanfare, the members of MOSTLY AUTUMN quietly walk through the crowd and up onto the stage to warm applause. The lights dim for what is the beginning of a quality two-hour spectacle of music starting with the beautiful “Sight of Day”, taken from their latest album of the same title.
The band continue to please the crowd with an eclectic selection of songs, taken from their healthy catalogue, which are all delivered with a wonderful precision, clarity and passion.
Vocalist Olivia is on top form tonight, yet the wonderful way in which vocals are swapped for certain songs show a band not afraid to experiment. This is blatantly apparent when flute, whistles and even a glockenspiel accompany the thumping rhythm section, magical keyboards and superb lead guitar solo’s. MOSTLY AUTUMN have fused the sounds of several genres together, made it their own and long may they continue doing so.
Overall, MOSTLY AUTUMN’s delivery is sublime, as is the FOH sound tonight, making the whole event a success. Even a few technical hitches were not going to spoil this gig and once over the crowd quietly disperses with chatter remaining entirely positive in every respect of the band.
MOSTLY AUTUMN could and should be bigger and why they aren’t is one for the small print in discussions elsewhere. However, if you have an evening spare and they are performing nearby, this writer heartily recommends you go and see them.
A new album “White Rainbow” is on the horizon. If you’d like something a little different then a strictly limited 2000 copies containing a second disk of original music is available whilst stocks last. Order here - http://www.mostly-autumn.com/2/News.html
