ODDITY ROAD / CHAY SNOWDON / THE HELTERS - Phoenix, Exeter 20.10.18

CLAIRE HILL

Exeter Phoenix is currently undergoing a refurbishment, so tonight’s gig is taking place in the upstairs Voodoo Lounge. It’s a decent size room for this type of band and looks like it could accommodate around 75/100 people. The doors open a little later than billed and the handful of people waiting make their way upstairs ready to check out the first of tonight’s two support acts.

Alternative rock/indie four-piece THE HELTERS start off this evening’s entertainment with ‘Crystalline’, vocalist Mark Owen is in good voice, aided on backing vocals by guitarist Davey Roberts. Charlie Last on drums and Conor Dolan on bass work in harmony without the need to look at each other, and the riffs and solos from Davey Roberts are engaging. Although the audience is small in number, those that are here are liking what they’re hearing; heads are nodding and toes are tapping! By the end of their seven song set, made up of songs from both their debut and the newer ‘Afghani Super Smack’ EPs, including ‘23rd’, ‘Salt’ and ‘Drift’ plus a couple of newer tracks including ‘Dead Eyed’, a catchy song they played for the first time tonight, the guys were nicely warmed up and could’ve played for a few more songs if time had allowed, as the small audience were definitely into their tunes.

CHAY SNOWDON and his band come on to the stage and proceed to do a soundcheck, after which the self assured youngster addresses the 20/30 people in the room and tells us, “We don’t call that a soundcheck, we call it a taster!”. Chay then introduces himself and his band and asks everyone to move closer to the stage. From the first verse of opening song ‘She’s A Keeper’, it’s obvious Chay has talent in droves and the charisma and confidence to match. His voice is strong and clear, he throws out guitar licks with abandon, he’s real storyteller and looks perfectly at home on the stage. As they play Chay’s last single, ‘Zenopia’, the audience are singing along and dancing, clearly loving it. ‘Mon Cheri’ follows, “which will be out at some point this year, hopefully”, after which Chay takes the time to introduce each member of the band a second time. They are all wearing patterned shirts, something Chay draws attention to. “I don’t know if you can tell but we’re all a fan of a loud shirt, so I thought I’d write a song about it!”, ‘Loud Shirts’ is up next. The interaction between the skilled band members as they play their nine song set is fantastic, the chemistry is dynamic and it looks like they are having a lot of fun.

By the time headliners indie/alternative rockers ODDITY ROAD hit the stage at just after 10pm and launch immediately into first song, ‘The Same As It Ever Was’, the small crowd seem more than up for it. Lead singer Jack Heath pauses momentarily to say hello to the 20/30 people in the small room, before introducing next song ‘You’. The stage setting is very simple, huge white O and R letters at the back. A group of lads down the front are clearly massive fans as they sing along to every note and are bouncing away right in front of the stage, which makes the band members smile as they perform songs from their ‘Handshake’ EP and a couple of new tracks, including ‘Forever Away’ and ‘1,000 Miles’, which is such a new song that we’re almost the first ones to hear it!

The band sound musically tight together, and the vocals are good. Set closer ‘All Again’, which Jack mentions we “may have heard on Radio 1” is obviously one that people have been waiting for as it gets a huge reaction. Although the audience tonight may have been significantly smaller than the band may be used to in their local Sheffield, they were keen nonetheless. Hopefully it won’t be too long before they get a chance to see Oddity Road again.

Band members:-

Jack Heath - vocals/guitar Dan Brennan - guitar

Joel Gilbourne - bass Ethan Lambert - drums
