Two weeks after the release of second offering ‘Greater Than’ Birmingham rap-rock outfit SHVPES have taken to an understated mini-tour playing some of the countries more modest venues to give fans a taste of the new songs live.

First up are tonight’s local opener, alternative rock quartet HOLLOW HANDS whose catchy vocals and riffs really stand out. Having formed just two years ago they’ve clearly mastered the art of ‘playing live’ which probably sounds condescending but so many bands just play their songs, these guys have absolutely nailed transitioning between songs, adding crowd interaction into songs, great vocal harmonies and beginning/ending songs like they mean it – you would be forgiven for thinking they were headlining tonight’s event. They’re an absolute joy to watch and hopefully one to keep an eye out for in the future. With only 30/40 people in the main venue during their set, you can’t help but feel like those sat in the bar waiting till later are really missing out…

All of the scheduled set times seem to go straight out of the window with early doors and each band playing earlier than scheduled with support slots lasting 20-25 minutes each. Nevertheless, when WARS take to the stage the venue starts to fill out and the energy levels fill up with them. Lead vocalist Rob Vicars clearly means every single word he screams as he clutches his t shirt as if he’s trying to tear it open. The stage lights up both literally and figuratively during the breakdowns which is really driven home by the fact that these guys are incredibly tight. I know it’s a Tuesday night but it really does seem such a shame that this venue is barely half full – these guys are absolutely killer and heavy rock/metal fans really need to know about them!

The momentum of incredible bands doesn’t show any sign of slowing as COVE take to the stage. Fresh off the back of playing a string of support slots for Palm Reader earlier this year, the Kent 5-piece deliver an onslaught of the senses with their in-your-face, no-escape groove laden hardcore.

Last up tonight are SHVPES who are promoting, albeit slightly prematurely, their new album ‘Greater Than’. The venue is probably just over half full as they take to the stage but it doesn’t seem to even remotely phase vocalist Griffin Dickinson who leaps around the stage erratically spinning around during their first few songs. Their unique blend of metal and hip hop may not be to everyone’s liking but the high-energy, party atmosphere they bring to the stage is undeniable. It is slightly hampered this evening in parts due to the fact that the audience doesn’t seem to have had quite enough time to fully take in all of their newest material, but the old songs seem to go down an absolute treat with everyone. The vocals are really strong and Griffin barely seems to stop to take a breath whilst singing despite frantically throwing himself around the stage. Quite possibly a marmite band - it does feel like they really strike a chord with their fan base, possibly filling a niche gap in the current music scene that no-one else is attempting.
