SIMON MCBRIDE / ED CONWAY AND THE UNLAWFUL MEN  - The Robin 2 Bilston 06.11.17

Support for this midweek gig comes in the form of seasoned folkies Ed Conway and the Unlawful Men. They work their way through a strong set of Levellersesque raggle taggle in the shape of opener, ‘Star’ and more traditional numbers like ‘Silver Dagger’. The Newport quintet do well to rouse the sparse crowd and the eponymous Conway’s powerful vocals are ably abetted by Simon Carswell on keys, Paul Crewe on drums, Simon Mann on bass and Jonathan Thompson on guitar.

Main attraction, Simon McBride has a huge reputation in blues circles with regular comparisons being made to fellow Ulstermen Gary Moore and Rory Gallagher and the influence of the former Thin Lizzy man is in evidence immediately in the form of rock-blues number ‘Heartbreaker’ which kicks off the set. The raw vocals and sonorous guitar work merely serve to reinforce the similarities.

‘Don’t Dare’ from McBride’s as yet untitled new album takes us into heavier territory and ‘Fat Pockets’ is another foray into the kind of blues-rock that became Moore’s forte. Highlights include Hendrix staples ‘Little Wing’ and ‘Spanish Castle Magic’ which reinforce the view that McBride is one of the leading blues guitarists of his generation.

McBride has a top-notch band to back him and Dave Marks’ funk-bass comes to the fore in ‘Change’ whilst the drumming of Marty McCloskey is a highlight of blues-rocker ‘Pushing it Out’.

It was a shame to see a sub-hundred crowd at The Robin for this calibre of headliner with such a strong support act and it is to be hoped that the Northern Irishman’s burgeoning reputation is better recognised in the remaining dates of his UK tour.
