The last time I saw Stone Trigger they were supporting LA Guns at The Underworld at the the tail end of last year. Tonight Dublin’s finest young sleaze rockers return to London playing a special one off set at the legendary dive bar Slim Jim’s Liquor Store. Tonight Stone Trigger are starting their mini UK tour in style.
Kicking off the night with the hard driving ‘Edge Of Insanity’. ‘Black Venom’ is terrific, with a harder sound and a big ‘80s glam chorus that grabs your attention.
I’ve seen Stone Trigger a few times across various venues around London and the four piece band is obviously letting loose tonight. Although billed as a special unplugged show it seems the band just can't resist turning the volume up and by the 3rd song of the night the neighbours are actually complaining about the noise! Frontman Tommy Rockit dedicates the next several songs to the local council.
Drummer Moyano El Buffalo is simply superb, doing more with a single pad, a symbol and a box then most drummers manage with a full kit and he really powers songs like ‘I Declare War’, a snappy mid tempo rocker with a buzzing guitar riff from Andii Andrews. In a genre where it's all too easy to become derivative Stone Trigger sound hungry and their delivery is lively as hell too.
The band then tear through Thin Lizzy’s `Killer On The Loose` before original number `Masquerade`. Since Stone Trigger are once again going to be supporting LA Guns on their forthcoming UK tour
its only appropriate that they cover one of their songs and `Over The Edge` is a hugely enjoyable and underrated song.
The fist pumping anthem `Show Your Hands " is dedicated to the late great Ronnie James Dio and frontman Tommy does his utmost to stir the crowd and get everyone moving in the tiny venue. Between their stage banter and flicking the mass of bras on the ceiling ceiling the band seem to be enjoying themselves too."Now the 1st single we ever released, this is called `Rattle your Bones`". Its not fancy but it definitely gets the job done tonight.
Since this is a show with a difference we are treated to a few special covers, the first of them being another Thin Lizzy classic ‘Waiting for an Alibi’, for which this very writer is invited up on stage to share the vocal duties! Ending their short set with the Billy Idol classic/Rock Karaoke anthem ‘Rebel Yell’, Stone Trigger take a well deserved bow.
