This was the 9th date on this Co-headline tour when Thirteen Stars and The King Lot rolled into Cardiff to bring their brand of rock to the nations capital

Opening the bill for them this evening were Excursia, a young South Wales 5 piece heavy rock band who embraced their debut at Fuel playing a powerful set of both original music from their EP ‘Rise’ and cover tracks. For such a young band they play well and clearly enjoying their time on stage and it will be interesting to see where they go from here.

Next up were Cardiff based Beth Blade And The Beautiful Disasters who have taken a short break from live performances to concentrate on writing their next album. Starting off with a couple of established tracks there was no signs of the break, appearing both confident and relaxed. Beth announced that the next track was one of the newly written songs and the crowd were to be their ‘Guinea Pigs’. Despite one or two teething problems, ‘Give It All You Got’ and ‘On and On’ demonstrated that the band have grown as a unit and these have the potential to be their best material to date. A great, short set from one of Fuel’s regular bands.

The King Lot were next on the bill and speaking to Jason before the show, it seemed that Cardiff was a little fortunate to have these guys perform as he’d been suffering with an illness that affected his throat and this may mean that they might have to cut their set short. Seeing The King Lot was a first for us - we’d heard their music and seen the social media frenzy about these lads but sadly we’ve missed their live shows. From C K Gillon’s striking drum intro, the addition of the deep rich bass and Jay’s masterful guitar work joined by Jason’s powerful vocals we knew this was going to be a good one.

The Cardiff crowd may have been small but The King Lot gave it everything, a stadium performance in a small venue. Their set was full of high energy, superb musicianship and there was plenty of banter between The King Lot, Thirteen Stars and the small but enthusiastic audience.

Their set list contained a mix of tracks from their self titled debut album and their recently released ‘A World Without Evil’. Playing a cover of The Cult’s ‘Lil Devil’ they had the small crowd singing along with them enthusiastically. The band seemed to be loving this as much as the crowd and even though struggling with the illness they added an additional track to their set ‘As They Burn’.

An awesome set by The King Lot, confirming all the great things we’ve seen posted about these guys.  They are a band not to be missed.

Set List:

Let’s Get Together

Hearts On Fire

Damaged Girls

All is Not Lost

Lil Devil (The Cult - Cover)

Until My Dying Days

One Of These Days

As They Burn

The King Lot Are:

Jason Sweeney - Vocals/Bass

Jay Moir - Guitars

C K Gillon - Drums/Vocals

The final band of the night, Thirteen Stars, were unknown to us, and we were a little apprehensive of what we were going to see. Having witnessed the banter between them and The King Lot during the previous set we had sensed that they were certainly going to entertain. Starting with ‘I’m Ready’ their brand of southern influenced rock was infectious, we were hooked.

These guys write catchy songs containing great riffs and uplifting melodies the type that you can’t fail to move to. Hoss’s gruff edged vocals and the combined guitars of him and Jax all supported superbly by the bottom line of Andy and Ryan produce some damn fine southern rock, from the North West of England.

Onstage they clearly love what they do, hurling banter at the guys from the King Lot and it being returned in spades this co-headline tour looks like it’s been a lot of fun. Wrapping up their set the King Lot join them on stage and both bands show their appreciation to the small but ecstatic audience and to each other.

Thirteen Stars were a band that hadn’t popped up on my radar until now, and that’s my loss, one I recommend you don’t make. I am looking forward to catching up with them again at Planet Rock’s Winters End next weekend.

Set List:

I’m Ready

Breadline

Break it Down Slowly

Are You Ready for the Weekend

Daddy’s Girl

Mint Jelly

Steel Horse

Running So Long

Tired of Waiting

Only a Soldier

Thirteen Stars are:

Hoss Thompson - Vocals/Guitar

Jax Sedgwick - Guitar

Andy Bates - Drums

Ryan Bell - Bass
