THE STONE ANGELS - The Cellar's Bar, Teignmouth 11.08.18

CLAIRE HILL

It’s a drizzly day in South Devon but that doesn’t seem to deter the early evening punters that are already in The Cellar’s Bar when we arrive. This is a pub ideal for live music, with a roomy dedicated space that’s miles apart from your typical cramped corner. The Stone Angels get straight down to business with their sharply executed, professional sounding set made up of most of the songs from their debut album ‘Spirit, Love & Higher Meanings’, all five tracks from their new self-titled EP (out 24th August) and a plethora of covers including an outstanding instrumental medley of ‘Voodoo Chile’, ‘Whole Lotta Love’, ‘Cochise’ and ‘The Chain’, which showcases the incredibly proficient musicianship these three guys have, to end the first half of their two hour set. The local lads are a tight unit, they are loud, but the sound quality is great. They have a handful of family and friends here to support them, but it looks like the Saturday night punters can’t get enough of them either.

The skilled musicians work their way through the second half of their set with ease, drawing in passersby from outside, so that by the time they’ve finished, the pub is absolutely rammed; the whole crowd on their feet with their hands in the air, singing, dancing, and generally having a damn good time. It’s a brave man who attempts Sting’s high pitched tones in a live setting, but Dan Hughes (lead vocals/guitar) not only managed it on ‘Message in a Bottle’, he carried it off with apparent ease. He then introduces ‘Take Me’ (from their album) and mentions there’s a lyric video on YouTube, to which Nathan Hughes (bass/backing vocals) admits “It’s a highly effective way to learn the words, it is in fact how I learnt the words, he (Dan) couldn’t be bothered to send me an email!”.

Highlights for me were ‘Animal’ and ‘Set Me Free’, from the band’s EP, and One Track Mind’ from their album. After being so impressed by The Stone Angels’ EP, I’ll admit to having some reservations about seeing them live. You know when a recording sounds really good and you have a feeling of dread that the band might not live up to expectations in a live setting? Yeah, that didn’t happen. The Stone Angels are great live. They’re also really humble and down to earth. They’re spreading their wings and taking flight on a short national tour next month, I highly recommend you check them out!
