Walking through the near deserted streets of Wolverhampton town, I turn a corner and catch my first glimpse of The Slade Rooms for almost a year. I love this venue, the bar staff are generally nice, the door staff are friendly and there’s always a great atmosphere from the folks who attend. Stepping through the doors to the venue I’m shocked to see an almost empty foyer, there’s a few people milling around by the bar, a few people sat at the tables and, as I step into the main room, I’m even more surprised to see that there’s very few people in here too. Stepping up to the barrier and having a chat with friends we wait patiently for the first band of the evening to take to the stage.

TEQUILA MOCKINGBYRD, the Aussie trio of Lousie Baker, Jacinta Jaye and Josie O’Toole, bring the room to life with their blend of Rock/Punk/Pop tracks. Their ease and energy on the small stage is contagious as the small audience flock to the barrier to engulf themselves in the bands performance. Playing tracks such as ‘Money Tree’, ‘Enjoy The Ride’ and ‘Pretty Picture’, while calling out for Jaegarbombs from the bar, the trio play a loud and vibrant set that sets the atmosphere for the evening. Finishing their short set on ‘I Smell Rock n’ Roll’, these three accomplished ladies receive a huge round of applause for their performance this evening.

Next up are AIRRACE, a melodic rock quintet from Cambridge, who deliver a wholesomely enjoyable 50 minute set packed with tracks including set opener ‘I Don’t Care’, ‘Caught in the Game’, ‘New Skin’, ‘Summer Rain’ and ‘Running out of Time’. Adam Payne (vocals) is a great frontman, working the audience, owning the stage and delivering strong vocals that the audience lap up. The room is now getting cosy and the atmosphere is charged with energy which seems to overflow onto the stage as the musicians really get into their set.

Rocky Newton is full of life, swinging the bass around, propping his foot upon the monitors and really getting into the melodic feel of the music. Guitarist Laurie Mansworth exudes the same energy as he delivers riffs aplenty. They play new record ‘Eyes Like Ice’ which goes down really well with the audience, their hands up in the air and everyone rocking out to the new material. Great track and sounding awesome in a live setting!

Linda Kelsey Foster seems to be hidden away in the darkest area of the stage, but she delivered on the keyboard, adding a wonderful synth layer to the music, cowgirl hat fully adding to her image, eve though she was difficult to spot in the darkness.

A great set, full of charisma and enjoyable rock that thumps you heavy in the chest. During their set I did feel my ear pop from the bass, ouch! Note to self, keep ears away from the speakers.

Headliners THE TREATMENT are certainly made for bigger stages than the Slade Rooms. Every moment of their time on stage just cries out for bigger audiences. Heavy, loud and full of dynamite the quintet deliver their mix of Hard Rock, Classic Rock & Punk to the eager audience who lap up very moment of their performance. And why wouldn’t they? Wild, frenzied and boasting more energy than a lorry full of Duracell bunnies, they take us through an hour long set that, in my opinion, could have gone on longer.

Frontman Tom Rampton bellows out vocals that scorch the air! Taking time to thank both the support bands for playing here tonight and telling the audience to talk to them later because “We want to meet as many of you beautiful bastards as possible!”.

‘Let’s Get Dirty’, their newest single is one hell of a track to hear live. All the guys are so animated on stage that they make me feel shattered just watching them. Brothers Tao & Tagore Grey, clad in their leather jackets, long dark hair swishing around their heads as they rock out are a force of their own, their energy rolling off them in abundance, saturating the stage and the audience with a lively, no fucks given attitude, not to mention those smiling faces that just emanate sheer joy at what they do on stage.

Playing tracks from their catalogue ‘The Doctor’, ‘Running With The Dogs’, ‘Cry Tough’, they deliver every track with precision and pace that has the crowd lapping up every moment.

Rick ‘Swoggle’ Newman is all over the stage too, throwing his bass around, rocking out, cap firmly in place, boot planted firmly on the monitor as he throws out a cheeky smile while the energy from the whole band seems to seep into the air, the music filling in the spaces where the audience is lacking, yet it makes no sense to me to not have a full house here tonight.

Dhani Mansworth delivers on the drums as he did in the previous band AIRRACE, pummelling and bashing his way through each set with aplomb. A truly awesome band to behold and I will no doubt happily catch these guys again soon.
