THREE DAYS GRACE / BAD WOLVES - SWG 3 Glasgow 08.10.18

Tonight's gig is at one of Glasgow’s newest venues SWG3. The former Customs & Excise bonded warehouse set just off the Clydeside Expressway has picked up many of the events previously scheduled for the fire ravaged O2 ABC in the past few months.

BAD WOLVES describe themselves as not just a band but a sonic wrecking ball destroying everything in their path. They take to the stage with 2018 album, Disobey opener ‘Officer Down’ and absolutely batter the already pretty packed hall’s audience. They keep up the tempo for ‘Learn to Live’ and vocalist Tommy Vext more than ably assisted by guitar duo Doc Coyle and Chris Cain, bassist Kyle Konkiel and drummer John Boecklin, growls and spits every lyric towards the crowd and when he orders them during ‘ Run for your Life ‘ to get the pit opened they duly oblige and go wild. ‘Hear me Now ‘ is the penultimate track from the short but intense set and closing tonight is The Cranberries’ ‘Zombie’ which Vext announces has just achieved Diamond sales in Europe and every penny raised from it will go to Dolores O’Riordan’s children which gets a huge cheer. This is one of those songs that everyone knows some of the words to, but tonight everyone knows every word. It is spine-chilling and I feel the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. All too soon it’s finished and the band throw everything from the stage into the crowd that’s possible to throw. One of the best support bands I’ve seen for a long long time and can’t wait for the next time.

Headliners tonight THREE DAYS GRACE were formed in Toronto in 1997, a couple of personnel changes down the line we are here in 2018 touring new album ‘Outsider ‘. The hall in SWG3 appears perfect for the band, the stage isn’t that high or far away from the crowd that makes it impersonal and I’m immediately impressed by the size of the crowd, it’s packed to the gunnels long before the band take to the stage. Bon Jovi’s ‘Living on a Prayer’ gets the crowd warmed up before the band take to the stage with opening track ‘The Mountain’ from their new album which confirms how personal this night is going to be from the band. The crowd sing along to vocalist Matt Walst’s every word. ‘Home’, ‘The Good Life’ and ‘Pain’ follow before ‘Infra Red ‘ with its extremely catchy hook gets aired. An excellent cover of Phantograms ‘ You Don’t Get Me High Anymore’ follows. Having not listened to Three Days Grace for quite some time I’m almost embarrassed by this as I’ve forgotten how bloody good they are. Guitarist Barry stock resplendent in long coat and beard cuts a fine figure stage left and his fretwork is downright outstanding. A backline duo of vocalist Matt’s brother Brad on bass and drummer Neil Sanderson never miss a beat the whole night. ‘Painkiller’ and ‘ I Hate Everything About You ‘ are personal favourites of mine tonight. Set closer tonight is ‘Animal I Have Become’ however there is no way the band are escaping without an encore tonight and we are treated to not one but three of them. ‘The Abyss‘, ‘Never Too Late ‘ and ‘Riot’ all get an outing and that’s it, we’re finished. An amazing night enjoyed by every single person in that crowd tonight, in a pretty impressive venue too, great sound and great, no, brilliant musicianship, hurry back to Glasgow, please.
