I came to this gig as an already fully indoctrinated VOODOO BLOOD fan. I wasn't expecting to see a frontwoman ever remotely compete with the firepower Kim displays at every show. VOODOO BLOOD are often an impossible act to follow, however, VODUN were remarkable and asserted their authority upon the show with style.

The show was opened up by what I found to be a mismatch to the rest of the bill in NOMAD. The Manchester based four-piece are a Sludge/Doom/Metal band who incorporate many elements from across the spectrum taking influence from the likes of Sabbath, EYEHATEGOD, Obituary etc. My inability to separate my own subjectivity in taste leads me, however, to have little to say about them. I don't like their style of music and it wouldn't be fair for me to pass comment on it as I imagine someone who likes their brand of somewhat doomy metal would have enjoyed them. The frontman had a likeable charisma about him when talking to the crowd but the songs did little for my pallet.

VOODOO BLOOD quickly followed to the stage and had the crowd with every last note. Currently promoting their most recent release 'Fresh Hell' the band is a seasoned gigging machine. Kim's voice electrifies the simplistic, but powerful backdrop of their catalogue. The 'Voodoo Woman' prances around the room in an effort to make contact with the audience further than the reach of the stage lights. Chris Norris's monster bass tone, combined with the FX driven wall of guitar from Sean Owens sits effortlessly on top of groove machine Will Lewis. They are truly a band who must be experienced live. A faultless performance from VOODOO BLOOD.

Suitably warmed up, the crowd were still eager for more. The place was well attended for a Tuesday night. It was great to see the support of people in such eager fashion.

VODUN took to the stage with an almost shy delicacy... I was full of intrigue because of the visual costumes. That was until I heard the singer and my intrigue turned into sheer joy. She has been compared to Aretha Franklin in some recent reviews, I hear a myriad of classic voices myself. The songs twisted and turned. Faultless compositions and faultless musicianship. My only nitpick is perhaps the lack of a bass player, the guitarist was very comprehensive in compensating for the bottom end with an array of FX but that's all it felt like. Compensating.

Often the lazy way to conduct a review would be to syphon off a list of influences I can hear. This band truly did not sound like anyone. Every time I thought I heard something I recognised they would tip the song on its head. Shout out to the exemplary percussion work from the drummer, she was an incredible talent behind the skins.

I would implore you to watch VODUN live. They defy comparison and I think every person would walk away with a differing opinion of them. A truly original and heartfelt band.

The lesson here is, always go to a gig on a Tuesday night, because you may find a band like VODUN!
