WITTERQUICK - THE KAIZENS - EVERYTHING ASIDE - MAX ALEXANDER - Cavern, Exeter 12.08.18

CLAIRE HILL

As it’s Sunday night, with an advertised doors time of 7pm, a small queue has begun to form by the time we’re informed that there’s been a bit of a mix up and things won’t be kicking off for another hour. I try not to look too conspicuous (on my own) but a friendly couple I’ve been chatting to invite me to the pub with them (thank you so much!). They’ve seen Witterquick a fair few times before so off we head for a drink and I get to learn what I’m about to expect…

After a chat and a drink in the pub we head back to the venue for the first support band.

MAX ALEXANDER is first up for a short set led by an instrumental number, which is a brave move. He’s proficient and skilled in his percussive acoustic style, however, and the half full Cavern crowd are appreciative. He then starts to sing an emotional love song, and his voice is clear and confident. He holds the attention of the audience, including some of the other bands on the bill who are watching to cheer him on. Of the handful of original songs he sings, ‘Running’ really stands out; it’s on Spotify if you fancy a listen:

Coventry’s EVERYTHING ASIDE are next to take the stage, a last minute addition to tonight’s bill having played the rest of the tour and having been asked by Witterquick in the early hours of this morning to come down and play tonight. In light of that, you’d forgive them for looking a little bleary-eyed, but the alt rock/pop trio are energetic, self-assured and adept, powering through their set of original material including songs like ‘Walk Away’, a new track played for the first time on this tour, and their latest single, the awesomely riff-heavy ‘Layers’, and a couple of covers including ‘St Patrick’ by PVRIS and Paramore’s ‘Hard Times’. Vocalist Kate Thompson has a voice you can’t ignore and for a three piece they make a hell of a lot of noise. I can’t wait to see them again!

Kate Thompson - vocals/guitar

Nathan Gummery - bass

Kris Sharry - drums

Next to hit the stage it’s THE KAIZENS, from Torbay. With their energetic brand of indie rock, the foursome bounce around the small Cavern stage as vocalist/guitarist Tom Bushin encourages the audience to “move closer to the stage and have a little dance”, which is exactly what they do.

Effortlessly playing songs from their debut self-titled and sophomore EP ‘Whiskey & Wine’, the band are a tight unit, the crowd needing no coaxing to join in on ‘My Love’ and are captivated by the performance of new single ‘You’. For the last track of their set, the band are joined on stage by Will Alford (vocalist) from Witterquick, which goes down a storm with the crowd! These young lads take command of the stage like they’ve been doing it for years and have the audience eating out of the palm of their hand. I’m looking forward to catching The Kaizens again soon.

By the time alt-rockers WITTERQUICK burst on to the stage, the Cavern is absolutely rammed. The Exeter five-piece are on fire for their home town end of tour show as they perform brand new song ‘Damaged’, and ‘Hiding Place’, which Will announces has 120,000 plays on Spotify, as if he can’t quite believe it. As they meticulously perform tracks from their ‘Beneath the Spinning Lights’ and ‘Fire and Ice’ EPs, the energy coming from these guys is palpable and infectious. What strikes me is although they’re more akin to the pop side of rock, there’s no denying the driving drums and big walls of guitars that make up their sound. They’ve “had about six hours sleep in three days so we’re feeling very emotional”, says Will, shortly before performing ‘Wayward Signs’, during which the crowd virtually take over, resulting in more than one of the Witterquick guys wiping away a few tears.

Latest single ‘Bubblegum’ is up next, and “The Kaizens have a surprise for you!”, says Will, as several huge inflatable beach balls are pushed into the room. The Cavern has a really low ceiling, and the balls get batted around on top of everyone’s heads for the duration of the song, like a mad game of volleyball, but everyone is having the best time and it’s a sight to see! (there is a video on the band’s FaceBook!). After that, it really is no holds barred and the stage doesn’t seem big enough for the grand finale, as Will and Sean both end up in the crowd as they perform, They are then joined on stage by Everything Aside and The Kaizens and you can just see everyone is having a great time. Encoring with ‘The Otherside’ and ‘Rise’, which almost tore the roof off the place. Witterquick certainly brought the party to the Cavern tonight, their interaction with the crowd was immense and they also proved that they’re accomplished, skilled musicians. Personally, I can’t wait for the next party; book me a place please guys!

It’s brilliant to see all the bands tonight taking the time to support each other and watch each other’s performances.
