INAIR - A Different Light

GRAHAM WEBB

November 24th 2017 saw the release of A Different Light, the eagerly awaited EP from the alternative rock band InAir who formed in January 2016 in Reading, UK. The EP follows on from the Meant To Be, their 3 track single that came out August 2016.

Bound To Break

From the outset, the opening bars offer a teasing yet momentum building introduction. Joe’s vocals are neatly crafted with a mellow undertone, combining with powerful, commanding bursts that remind me of several New Rock artists like BFMV and My Chemical Romance.

Aaron and Connor fill out the melody with some nice riffs and a drum track that draws you in as the track builds into something strong and compelling. This is a really good track which a lot of established bands would be proud to have in their arsenal. Reminiscent of Angels & Airways and 30 Seconds To Mars in some aspects, but with a bang up to date sound that is refreshing to hear.

Insomnia

A real Yin-Yang feel to this track, tempo changes and crescendo moments interspersed with deep and haunting lyrical content make this track work really well. Opposing elements combining to create a harmonious result. The synth-rock feel to this track is prominent and well worked, not too overpowering and adds atmosphere to whole production. From the chorus “The dreams were in the sky” is a great line to describe to someone what it feels like in the struggle to achieve sleep. Telling a story of long hours wondering why a few hours of blissful rest can’t be grasped. Some tracks get described as a ‘grower’; not this one. It’s in full bloom and showcases the musical talent in the band to perfection. This track promises great things and does not fail to deliver. This is one to put on repeat and allow it to keep you awake.

Rise Again

A good intro that moved along swiftly in the same vein as the previous tracks, the song leads into the 1st verse and bridge, sounding great until the chorus where I feel the direction of the track seemed to slip from the rails slightly. The rhythm changes and the feel of the song is almost angular and blocky, losing the sweet fluidity of the previous offerings. Towards the final third of the track the catchy vibe returns and the song fades out but I was left feeling a little short changed as the potential for this to be on a par with the rest of the EP is clearly there.

Tonight Is Our Night

Another nice synth rock intro that blends and morphs into crashing guitars and sharp sounding drums. Just at the point at which you’re about to jump around the room shaking your ass off, the beat drops, the guitars cease and the synth returns with a little bass to lead the vocals into the track. The soft melody wraps its arms around you and leads you back towards the now building, heavy guitar and drum infused summit of the song. Backing vocals and harmonies melt together ensuring you will replay this track time and again.

All in all this is a well produced EP from a band who clearly work hard to produce a fresh, original sound. Lots of potential and on the back of several Festival appearances during 2017 they have a bright future.
