Interview with.....ANAVAE

Following the release of their new EP ‘Are You Dreaming?’ DTF caught up with Rebecca Need-Menear and Jamie Finch, the duo behind the alt-rock, electronica, pop band that is taking the rock music underworld by storm.

Formed in 2011 and signing to the independent record label LAB Records based in Manchester, Anavae released their debut EP ‘Into the Aether’ in 2012 followed in 2013 by their second EP ‘Dimensions’ which reached the top 10 in the iTunes Rock Chart. After a small bump in the road they switched record labels and are now signed to Better Noise Records / Eleven Seven Music Group and have released their much anticipated third EP entitled ‘Are You Dreaming?’, featuring 5 original tracks that are just awesome!

HOW HAS THE RESPONSE BEEN TO THE NEW EP? PERSONALLY I LOVED IT! BUT WHAT RESPONSE HAVE YOU HAD FROM YOUR FANS?

Obviously we care most about what our long term followers think about each release, as sonically, it is a little bit different to our previous releases, so there is of course a chance that they could hate it, but their reaction has been so positive, and so wonderful. We've read so many tweets and comments saying "it's been totally worth the wait" and what a wait it has been, so that's meant a lot to us.
We did receive one entertaining comment on one of our new music videos cursing our label for our 'commercial' change in direction which was both complimentary and insulting. We love a lot of 'commercialised' music so if people think it could fit in a 'commercialised' market then, hoorah! (All of our music direction choices are ours alone. Sorry, not sorry.)

YOU DID A LIVE VIDEO STREAM ON FACEBOOK A LITTLE WHILE AGO FOR THE RELEASE OF THE VIDEO ‘ARE WE ALONE?’, THERE WERE FANS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD, BRAZIL, UKRAINE, AUSTRALIA, NEW YORK, UK, FRANCE, ETC TUNING IN, DOES IT AMAZE YOU THAT YOUR MUSIC IS REACHING SO MANY PEOPLE IN SO MANY COUNTRIES?

I think that's the beautiful power of the internet. We uploaded music videos on YouTube long before we started playing shows so right from the start we've been used to conversing with listeners from around the world rather than face to face with people in the UK...which is both a blessing and a curse.

IF YOU COULD PLAY ON ANY STAGE IN THE WORLD WHERE WOULD YOU WANT TO PLAY? AND WHY?

I saw Oh Wonder play their first headline (sold out) show at Brixton Academy a few weeks back which was so inspiring. I can't ever really imagine reaching that point or goal, but it's a nice goal to have.

YOU RECENTLY WENT OVER TO CANADA FOR THE HALIFAX POP EXPLOSION FESTIVAL, HOW WAS THAT AND WHAT KIND OF RESPONSE DID YOU GET?

The most unforgettable thing about visiting Canada was discovering the stereotype about Canadians is completely accurate. They're unbelievably lovely, hospitable, welcoming... etc. etc. We felt right at home the moment we landed and would most definitely love to return to tour if we were given the opportunity. (If anyone wants to take us on tour. Hint. hint.)

SO BACK IN THE UK, AND YOU HAD YOUR FIRST HEADLINE SHOW AT THE CAMDEN ASSEMBLY WHICH WAS A SOLD OUT GIG, HOW DID THAT FEEL?

Obviously marvellous. We didn't expect so many people to head down after so long. We were able to announce that new music REALLY WAS very close to being released FOR REAL this time as well which was great. After waiting so long for a release date, getting to announce it to real people rather than to a computer screen felt... yeah you get the gist.

PREVIOUS TO CAMDEN YOU’VE SAID ON YOUR FACEBOOK PAGE THAT THH LAST 12 MONTHS HAVE BEEN A BIT FRUSTRATING, CAN YOU EXPLAIN A LITTLE ABOUT THAT AND HOW YOU’VE GOT THROUGH IT?

We wrapped up the recording process for this EP over a year and a half ago so never really knowing when or even if the music would ever get out there into the world was disheartening and upsetting. It's just a relief to finally be able to free it.

SO WHATS NEXT FOR ANAVAE, I KNOW YOU HAVE THE CROYDON ROCKS FESTIVAL ON THE 2ND/3RD DECEMBER, ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO THAT?

We're also playing two dates at Boston Music Room with Area 11 on the 11th and 12th of December. The 12th date sold out quicker than they had anticipated, so this will be the first time we've played two dates in the same place before. I'm hoping for an enjoyable Ground Hog Day experience  :)

We've also got a new music video coming out soon which we created with a good friend of ours. (I almost get washed out to sea and pulled over by a horse...)

WHAT CAN THE FANS EXPECT IN 2018 FROM ANAVAE?

At the moment 2018 is a blank canvas! Bring it on.
