Interview with.....INGLORIOUS

Lindsay Smith-Boam

With their UK Tour fast approaching, we took the opportunity to have a chat with the band....

INGLORIOUS II HAS BEEN INCREDIBLY WELL RECEIVED BY CRITICS AND FANS – WAS THERE ANY APPREHENSION THAT THIS ALBUM WOULD NOT LIVE UP TO THE EXPECTATION OF IT BEING AS STRONG AS THE FIRST ONE?

Thanks a lot! We’re very proud of the new record. We didn’t feel any pressure to ‘top’ the first one at all and we wanted to add to the momentum that we were gaining so just got on with it. We were all ready to play some new material too!

THE ALBUM LAUNCH NIGHT WAS THE LAST TIME I CAUGHT UP WITH YOU GUYS – SOMETHING FELT DIFFERENT THAT NIGHT FROM BOTH THE FANS BUT ALSO FROM YOU GUYS – A STEP UP IF YOU LIKE....DID YOU FEEL IT TOO?

Absolutely, we had a year of hard touring under our belts and wanted to show people how far we’d come. When we heard how many people we had coming to the launch, we knew it’d be a special night and it really was. Our fans are truly fantastic and to see more and more at each show is very humbling.

YOU ALL CLEARLY ENJOY PLAYING LIVE AND YOU HAVE TOURED ALONGSIDE SOME GREAT ARTISTS OVER THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS, STEEL PANTHER, LAST IN LINE, AND PERFORMED AT SOME PRETTY AWESOME FESTIVALS INCLUDING DOWNLOAD, STEELHOUSE ETC – ANY STAND OUT MOMENTS AND ANY BANDS PAST OR PRESENT YOU WOULD LOVE TO GO ON TOUR WITH.

Well the first tour of Europe with The Winery Dogs was a massive 3 week ‘moment’ for me, personally. I love the band and am a huge fan of the guys’ individual projects too so it was a dream come true! Also, Download and Ramblin' Man were a ‘kick up the ass’ in terms of crowd size. Then our tour with Steel Panther was a bit gruelling travel-wise, but an amazing experience! I have many great memories already including playing ‘La Cigale', Paris - We had a standing ovation all round there which was mind-blowing!

Personally, I’d love to open for Van Halen, Kiss etc.. The massive rock bands. I think we could really bring it on a stage of that size.

IT IS GREAT TO SEE DREW BACK IN THE BAND, WAS THERE ANY TREPIDATION ABOUT BRINGING HIM BACK IN AND WHO PUT HIS NAME INTO THE FRAME?

Yeah it is. We’re cousins and he’s the one who suggested me and Phil for the band in its very early stages. He’s a fantastic guitarist with a great sound and can play whatever you ask him too.... We had had a few drinks and were talking about possible guitarists to get in. Me and Nathan looked at each other and it was a ‘Drew, obviously’ moment. He literally called him on the spot and Drew agreed to it.

PLAYING LIVE – IS THERE ONE TRACK THAT YOU ALL LOVE TO PLAY ABOVE ALL OTHERS AND WHY?

We love playing all the tracks live to be honest. As long as there’s a good mix and faster-paced songs in there too! I love going full tilt on songs like ‘Warning’, ‘Taking the blame’ etc. But then I like laying back on songs like ‘Making me pay’ and ‘I don’t need your loving’.

WHEN YOU ARE WRITING WHERE DOES THE INSPIRATION COME FROM AND HOW DOES THE PROCESS WORK? YOU PLAY SO MANY LIVE GIGS AND SPEND A LOT OF TIME ON THE ROAD SO DO YOU CONSCIOUSLY GIVE YOURSELVES CREATIVE TIME AND LOCK YOURSELVES AWAY AND WORK THROUGH SONGS OR IS IT MORE OF AN EVOLVING PROCESS WHICH CULMINATES IN YOU GOING INTO THE STUDIO TO WRITE AND RECORD.

We all write individually and then also together. This album was predominantly written at Phil’s (drummer) family home in his bedroom. Then there were a few written separately too. We don’t want to write in the studio so we get each song nailed before going in.

SONG FROM EITHER ALBUM YOU ARE MOST PROUD OF AND FOR WHAT REASON? THAT’S TOUGH AS IT CHANGES A LOT. BUT RIGHT NOW:

Breakaway and Bleed for you from the first.. Phil and I recorded the demo for breakaway at his ex girlfriends using a bizarre setup and it’s cool to hear it now. Bleed for you was a song that I had for years and tried it in different bands. Nathan got it, wrote an amazing top line and nailed it.

Faraway and No Good For You from ‘II’. Faraway was pretty much written and Adde added the awesome riff in the middle. Nathan wrote a great lyric for it about his Grandad who’s unwell. It’s touching, honest and a bit different for us - I love it. No Good For You was recorded for the first album though didn’t make it as we didn’t capture it. We started playing it live after re-working it and it went down well so we recorded it. I love the energy of this song... very Whitesnake.

ARE YOU THINKING ABOUT AN INGLORIOUS III YET? KEVIN SHIRLEY MIXING INGLORIOUS II ON TOP OF SOME TOP NOTCH ENGINEERING GAVE THE ALBUM A GREAT SOUND WHICH WILL BE HARD TO BEAT– CAN WE EXPECT TO SEE YOU WORKING WITH THE SAME TEAM OR IS IT TOO EARLY TO SAY?

We feel that we have a great team in place now with Tony Draper engineering and Kevin Shirley mixing so yeah, I think we all want to work together again! We’re literally in the early stages of getting ideas together to put a record out maybe later next year. Obviously, with Drew in the band, we can branch out a bit more musically and experiment creatively with different sounds and vibes so who knows how it’ll end up. It’ll kick ass though ;)

THE UK TOUR IS COMING UP – WHAT CAN WE EXPECT?

A slightly heavier, certainly tighter unit than previous UK tours. We have more material now to choose from so there’ll be some great moments for everyone. Also, new Merch etc. We can’t wait to see our fans again!

COMPLETE THIS SENTENCE....THE BEST THING ABOUT BEING IN INGLORIOUS IS...

....playing our music live for people who love it. Playing live is the true test for any band and we’re only getting better!
