DTF recently chatted to Mason Hill following their awesome set at RockWich.
Mason Hill are: Scott Taylor, vocals, James Bird, guitar, Marc Montgomery, guitar, Matthew Ward, bass, Craig McFetridge, drums.
LAST TIME I SAW YOU GUYS WAS AT THE INGLORIOUS ALBUM LAUNCH IN LONDON, IT WAS A GREAT NIGHT.
It was awesome unbelievable for us and Inglorious were more than nice to us, such an amazing night and a perfect debut in London. It was our first time in London too so very special.
We just went for it – nothing to lose and absolutely everything to gain, we always do our best and we really did just go for it but also we really enjoyed it.
SCOTT AND JAMES, YOU HAVE BEEN FRIENDS SINCE SCHOOL IT MUST BE PRETTY AMAZING TO SEE ALL THE HARD WORK OVER THE YEARS IS STARTING TO COME TO FRUITION FOR YOU.
Yes, we have been friends since school and have had several bands together, ‘Between the Fist’ was a catchy named one…. It’s great to be on this journey together.
YOUR DEBUT EP ATTRACTED A GREAT DEAL OF ATTENTION, YOU HAVE NOW SIGNED WITH FRONTIERS SO ARE YOU WRITING AGAIN NOW?
Yes, the first EP was awesome, we are so looking forward to recording a full debut album which will be out just after summer 2018 we think. We are writing now and we will have around 10 good solid tracks as a great debut album can be a game changer. We are sure that it is going to be 20 or even 50 times better than the EP. We want to put out the best debut album we can, it is a huge chance for us but there is some pressure as people remember a band’s debut album. At the moment we are collecting all the tracks we have and picking out some of the best parts of tracks from others to further work on. Some songs me (Scott) and James wrote together when we were 15 and some have some great parts which we can now revisit and rework.
WHERE ARE YOU GOING TO BE RECORDING AT?
No idea where yet. We don’t know if it’s even going to be in this country. Only guarantee is that will be on this planet! We are pretty close to getting a really great producer so we are so looking forward to the whole experience. Exciting times!!
HOW WAS FILMING THE VIDEO FOR ‘NOW YOU SEE ME’?
Another really great and surreal experience. The one thing we cannot get over is just how many views it’s had and honestly it isn’t just us clicking on to it constantly! It has over 110,000 views in 6 weeks! How insane is that? I said (James) to Craig when it had been out a week that it would be pretty cool if it hit 50,000 views by the album release in 2018. But to hit I think it’s around 114,000 today is so cool.
HAS SOCIAL MEDIA PLAYED A PART IN GIVING YOU EXPOSURE?
Absolutely yes, it is a great asset and it is necessary, there is no way you can avoid it so you have to use it. It is a global place to have your music, a great platform.
THE MASON HILL FAN GROUP SPRUNG TO LIFE FOLLOWING YOU SUPPORTING INGLORIOUS.
That was amazing. It is a bit like a dream, a pinch me moment if you like, that people actually did support us and want to follow what we do. It’s really important and we are so grateful to our fans.
YOU HAVE MORE LIVE DATES COMING UP AND A HEADLINE TOUR.
Yes, we are looking forward to them so much. We have Deever with us on our tour and we also have dates with Gun, which for us is an honour, they are one of the best bands to come out of Scotland and it will be a proud moment for us. We are also looking forward to Planet Rockstock in Wales – Scotland one day, Wales the next – an 8 hour drive which can be spent well hitting our video up with views!! Winterstorm too which we love so it is great we can play that again.
WHICH BANDS HAVE INFLUENCED THE MASON HILL SOUND?
Definitely Alter Bridge and more recently Shinedown, they both have that easy on the ear melody but are a definite rock band and that is where we want to sit. A modern rock band with a classic feel and a melodic line. Growing up there were so many great bands and singers, Bad Company, Free amongst them but so many it would be hard to knuckle it down to one or two who have influenced us. All bands evolve, their music evolves with each performance and recording and that is how it will be for us, trying to find what works for us but going with it too.
YOU ALL SEEM TO BE REALLY HAPPY AND HAVE FUN WHEN PERFORMING. HAS IT TAKEN TIME TO GET TO THAT STAGE?
We have our sound nailed, we are comfortable with our identity and now we are a tighter band as we practice like fuck, we don’t just get together and do a show, there is so much more to it than that, it is bloody hard work. It’s rigorous but you need that chemistry and I think we have that now.
WHAT ONE BIT OF ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE NEW BANDS?
Work hard! it is one of the hardest jobs but it is also a privilege. You have a duty to be at this every day, to make sure you don’t waste the opportunities you get along the way. In a nutshell – have no regrets, work hard and don’t waste opportunities.
A lot of people get into it thinking it is going to be a constant party but there is so much you don’t realise like the 8 hour drives, lots of dead moments. You also need a lot of patience! Be nice to everyone, you never know who is listening.
Absolutely be nice to everyone – we had one of those major surreal moments with Ted Poley (Danger Danger). He asked to meet us, he’d seen the video and so we had another pinch me moment with that one! He gave us advice and was such a nice guy. So take advice from people, be nice and be respectful no matter what.
Always do your best when performing too, no matter if it’s to 5 people in a 500 capacity venue, perform it, give it your all. The show we played to very few people at was videoed and was seen by one of the powers that be and next thing you know we are on the bill at Download! That was another pinch me moment, walking passed the likes of Steven Tyler and other legends at Download…
There can be people in the room that don’t particularly like your type of music but if you give a great performance they will remember that. You could be influencing a kid or impressing a promoter, it doesn’t matter who is there, give it 100% always.
HAVE YOU ENJOYED ROCKWICH?
It has been really awesome. It is so nice to see little kids at the barrier with the older fans and the whole thing has such a family atmosphere, everyone is smiling. It has been really well organised and fun. We love playing shows and bringing our music to more people. Hopefully people who had not heard of us before today may go and check us out on social media and even view the video!!
