SWEET & LYNCH - Unified

MARIA GLOVER

SWEET & LYNCH is a hard rock band centred around Michael Sweet (Stryper, Boston) and George Lynch (Dokken, Lynch Mob), with James Lomenzo (Megadeth) on bass, and Brian Tichy (Whitesnake, Dead Daisies) on drums.

Unified is the second album from Sweet & Lynch and is an essential addition to your collection if you are a fan of classic rock. “It’s an incredible combination of classic 70s and 80s”, says Michael Sweet, “You will hear some flavours of Journey, Bad Company, Dokken, Van Halen and Stryper…."

The combination of Sweet’s melodic vocals and Lynch’s iconic guitar style combine well with a strong rhythm section provided by Lomenzo and Tichy. There is no doubt about the musical strength and experience here; this is a powerhouse combo of talent.

The first track 'Promised Land' is a great opener with a strong drum beat and powerful vocals. This track is anthemic and will be awesome live! Walk' is next which has an Aerosmith-Queen hybrid feel to it and is one of my favourites on the album. It has a true 80s classic rock feel to it and the familiarity of Sweet's voice is perfect. 'Afterlife' is a contemporary fresh track and is a strong addition to the album. Sweet is on fire, and both the vocals and the beautiful guitar solo have a haunting quality. It's moody and intoxicating. I love it.

'Tried & True' is a well-formed bluesy ballad with classy lyrics - "you're beautiful and I'm blessed that you're mine" (swoon… I am!) Again there is a clear 70s/80s influence and the vocals are simply stunning in places. The title track 'Unified' has a unique tone in places which sets it apart. It's mysterious and funky and a little different from some of the other tracks on the album.

'Find Your Way' is my favourite track and worth the price of the album alone. Those drums! I can feel them in my bones. That bass! This track is banging, it's exhilarating. I cannot get enough it! 'Bridge of Broken Lies' is another ballad, with a stunning intro and some epic riffs. The track is still edgy and has solid vocals. 'Live to Die' closes the album on a high with an inspiring #onelifeliveit attitude. There's a rawness about Sweet's voice which adds to the passion. It's a satisfying close to a well-rounded album.

A few tracks are, for me, album filler tracks as they don’t deviate from what we know and have already heard - 'Make Your Mark', 'Heart of Fire' and 'Better Man'. Even with this considered, this album is in your face and vibrant. It has loud, tender, polished and primal. It is a must for Sweet and Lynch fans, and it gives a great insight into the musicians who continue to inspire new and upcoming bands.

What sets this album apart? For me it’s the drums and the timeless quality of Sweet's voice. Can you listen to it with the kids in the car? Yes, and you should. Should you buy it? Hell yeah!

It’s an 8/10 for me!
