INTERVIEW WITH...CHAY SNOWDON
CHAY SNOWDON is a South West based Indie Rock/Pop four-piece consisting of frontman Chay on vocals and rhythm guitar, Liam Roberts on lead guitar, George Roach on bass and Ed Fox on drums. The young band met at school a few years ago, with drummer Ed joining when he met the others at University. Going on to appear on BBC Introducing and now having shared a stage with WILLE AND THE BANDITS, ODDITY ROAD, THE SNUTS and GLASS CAVES, the band have also put in an appearance at numerous festivals including Camden Rocks, and sold out shows in Bristol and Plymouth on their recent headline UK tours.
The current double single ‘Mon Cheri’/‘Sha La La’ is the perfect introduction to new listeners of the band as the two songs are worlds apart in style but wonderfully complementary of each other too. Both songs follow a theme of admiration. ‘Mon Cheri’ is a fast-paced, dynamic song with softly seductive interludes woven in. Crashing cymbals and chugging riffs combine with Chay’s powerful, soaring vocal, ensuring this will get you up on your feet, whether that be listening at home, out and about, or in a live setting! Chay told us, “It’s about admiring someone who just goes off to see the world”.
‘Sha La La’ is a slower, reflective track which makes the most of the subtle, soulful nuances in Chay’s graceful, bluesy vocal and conjures up images of beautiful summer evenings. The song has a wonderfully warm, easy swaying beat that perfectly matches the lyrics; the two combined stick in your head just like honey, the melody buzzing like bees around a honeypot. It’s so catchy! Says Chay, “This song is based around having a night out with that one person you admire and you can just forget about everything else”.
We asked Chay if he tended to use the same approach for songwriting with each song, or whether it differed at all. He said, “I tend to start with a line that generally will be the main hook of the song, although with ‘Mon Cheri’, I used a different approach and got the verses down first”.
Growing up, Chay listened to a lot of Elvis Presley, and you can definitely hear the influence of the crooner in the way Chay performs the more emotive of the two songs on the current single. These days, Chay has more varied taste and is into bands like Arctic Monkeys, Kings of Leon and Catfish and the Bottlemen, but he still has time for The King.
The band have already played Camden Rocks and Looe Music Festival and “plan on hitting the festival circuit really hard this year”. In an ideal world they would relish the chance to grace the stage at Reading and Leeds Festival one day, and of course Glastonbury; Chay says “That would be amazing!”. They’d also “love to go on tour with Catfish and the Bottlemen. We can’t get enough of their music and they seem really nice so I think it would be a laugh to!”
This double single showcases both the livelier and slower rock/pop style tracks that Chay and his band perform, and they do it with apparent ease. They may just get the Radio 1 play they are wishing for!
