INTERVIEW WITH... ADAM LEIGH METHVEN OF THE ADDICTION
Worksop's THE LOST DAYS have called time on the band-name but have created a new venture focused completely on original music under the new name of THE ADDICTION. Singer-songwriter Adam Leigh Methven tells us "Essentially we started out with absolutely zero knowledge of how the business works. We started out playing covers whilst throwing our own in there. It seemed like a great idea because we could get into venues that we wouldn’t have just playing original material. Alas, it seems that 300 shows deep, cover band fans and original band fans are two different people. I respect them both, but we really wanted to stop the same ol’ same ol’ and really make a go of it on the originals scene."
The band first got together early 2015 as a three-piece and held their debut gig on May 9th 2015 at The Wildlife, Creswell. Discussion turned over the coming months to add a further guitarist and in July 2015, they played their first show as a quartet at the Worksop Music Festival. Now the line-up was complete, the band had success on both local and BBC Radio and headlined venues such as O2 Academy and Corporation in Sheffield. In April 2016, the band released their debut, 4-track EP, 'Where We Began', and in 2017 their new single 'Feed My Fire' was released. They've been gigging pretty solidly all this time and this can't have been an easy decision as the band was making a name for itself locally; "to be honest, it’s been coming for quite a while now, but we had so many shows booked it was really hard to make any plans. I first had my doubts about ending it, but so far, it looks like everyone is behind us in our new venture."
As a fan of the band, what scared me was that they declared a "new direction" but Adam explains that we will still recognise them!; "you’ll absolutely be able to recognise our sound. We’re not making a complete U-Turn on our music. It will be balls-out rock n’ roll as that’s really where my heart is at and I believe I speak for the other guys when I say that. TLD fans will be able to expect the raunchy, high-octane explosive show we have always brought." Phew!
Sadly though, the original TLD material, which saw Adam nominated for Best Songwriter at Yorkshire Gig Guide Awards 2018, won't transfer to the new band; "I’m quite proud of the songs that we wrote, you know? But to be honest, I wanted us to have a clean start, a chance to reinvent ourselves. Though one song will be coming with us, as it’s written very much in the style of where we are taking things now. And it was written around the time this decision was made. The material is there already and we’re writing new material too. We’ve got to get things moving pretty fast as things are already happening for us! But at the same time, we’re not about to rush. We want each track we produce to be title track worthy. When it comes, it will be the best that we could have possibly delivered." Having seen them perform I have no doubt.
So when can we expect to see these guys on stage again? "We have some amazing shows booked just waiting to be announced. I can’t say just yet what they are, but let’s just say the first show will be in the Steel City! 2019 is going to be a hard year for us. But we enjoy the hard work, especially when it pays off. We will soon be in the studio, music videos, promo etc. There will be shows, actually, I hope we can get quite a lot of shows in for 2019. Playing live is really what we’re about. As it’s now technically our debut year, we’ve got a lot of work to get our name in all the right places. Hopefully, 2019 will bring us all the luck we need to take this machine right in the middle of the battlefield."
I'm excited for the future for the new band THE ADDICTION and waiting patiently (ish) for that first gig announcement.
