ASCENSION 2019 - MEET BLACKBALLED!
BLACKBALLED are no strangers to the home of ASCENSION; The Patriot in Crumlin, South Wales. The trio from Manchester have played at The Home of Rock on a couple of occasions previously, so know what a cracking venue it is. Marshall Gill, Tom Wibberley and Leon Gill will be bringing a set packed to the rafters with Guinness fuelled rock n’ roll, which they’ll play with a ton of passion and groove!
Formed in 2012 by NEW MODEL ARMY guitarist Marshall Gill and his drummer brother Leon, the pair recruited Tom Wibberley on bass and BLACKBALLED was born. The band earned a reputation for energetic live shows, and with demand for recorded material high, they put out a self-recorded EP in early 2103 and gigged over the UK and across Germany, with a debut album following in 2015. Following the album release, the band set their sights even further this time, playing shows in Europe, America, Brazil and Australia, as well as dates and festival appearances all over the UK. The band returned to the studio in 2016 to record the ‘Fulton’s Point’ album, which was released in 2017. The band secured a headline spot at Deerstock in 2018, plus a third European tour.
The band are very pro active in promoting their gigs and tours, and are fantastic at interacting with people on social media, which gets around the challenge of not having a huge budget for PR. At the end of January this year, BLACKBALLED signed to the German record label Metalville, which they are extremely proud of. They humbly say, “We are just three guys who like making music”. These three guys are about to depart for more European dates a couple of weeks prior to ASCENSION, so European audiences are evidently impressed by their stage shows, which the guys say have evolved throughout the years. The shows have got more energised, and they have also added humour into the shows; “Our shows are different every time. We all love playing music and the fact we get to play it live in front of people is an added bonus. The energy you get from playing live is something very special. Our studio stuff has also evolved, getting more polished and finished off. You could say we have matured as a band, we’re not just the generic rock band that people are used to”.
Taking their live influences from a variety of bands including AC/DC, LED ZEPPELIN and ZZ TOP, “all powerfully groovy bastards!”, BLACKBALLED say “it will be an honour to play alongside some top up and coming bands” at ASCENSION. They had some very lovely words to say about us too, “Down the Front Media are a top set of guys and girls. They really care about music which is very rare in this day and age”. Aww thanks guys, we really do; it’s all about the music! When BLACKBALLED return to the Home of Rock on Sunday 9th June at 19:15, they say we can expect “plenty of energy, great sound, beer, groovy tunes…what more could you ask for, come along and dance the night away!”. We are counting down the days.
