On a chilly autumn evening in Crumlin, the Welsh valleys were soon to be set on fire by 3 bands about to take The Patriot stage. When we arrived, the venue was already packed and the atmosphere was electric. Bumping into all the guys from Florence Black and Those Damn Crows they were as excited about this evening as much as we were.
The first band were Glassholes from Merthyr, four young lads that who are learning their craft and obviously enjoy what they do. Their set was a good mix of their own material and cover versions, I don’t think I’ve ever heard Shania Twain and Girls Aloud in a rock club before. They completed their set, overcoming one or two technical issues but these guys certainly entertained the crowd and I hope to catch them again
Tomas Dobbins (Vocals/Guitar)
Owen Davies (Guitar)
James Walters (Bass)
Sam Kelly (Drums)

Those Damn Crows were up next and from the moment they took to the stage the Patriot was bouncing. Playing tracks from their album ‘Murder and the Motive’ they were awesome, treating the crowd to ‘Going Down’ a new track from their forthcoming EP they absolutely nailed it. Shane (vocals) knows how to work the crowd, Lloyd (Bass) who at times reminds me of a young Steve Harris and Ronnie (Drums) drive the tracks along at breakneck speed, David & ‘Shiner’ (guitars) work together so well and create a sound that is phenomenal, all five of them work so well together that they have to be knocking on the door of a major breakthrough. ‘Blink of an Eye’ is obviously a crowd favourite as at times they drowned out the P.A. Speaking to the band after the show they have new music coming soon and their diary is filling up with a lot of shows in the coming months including Planet Rock’s Winters End Festival. They are a band that we highly recommend checking out if you’ve never seen them.

The headliners of tonight’s bill, Florence Black take the stage with no announcement just strolling up picking up their gear and just ripping into the first track. No airs, no graces just full on, high energy rock to the pure delight of the sold out Patriot. Playing tracks from their EP’s ‘Florence Black’ and ‘EP II’ Tristan, Fozzi and Perry give everything, feeling every note and beat - they leave nothing in reserve. After their cover of Budgie’s ‘Breadfan’ dedicated to a member of the crowd by Tristan, Perry looked absolutely shattered having to take a brief break to recover and launches his battered drumsticks into the crowd. We learned later that Perry cracked one of his cymbals during the penultimate track - how he doesn’t trash his kit every night I’ll never know, Joined on stage by Finley Nash, front man of local band ‘Revival’ they perform a brilliant cover of Neil Youngs ‘Rocking in the Free World’ with the capacity crowd joining in.
The band are fresh from the studio where they have been working with Benji Webbe from Skindred on their new single ‘Gunshot’ to be released on 5th November 2017 and they decided to give its debut performance to the Patriot crowd. A massive riff driven track which went down a storm, with the front few rows of the crowd head banging like their lives depended on it. Tristan has to take a little break at this point, driving himself to the point of exhaustion from the energy he puts into the show. Finishing off with ‘Smoke’ the crowd go absolutely wild and that is how to finish a show. . Florence black have a busy end of year with a UK tour and rounding off with a performance at the sold out Planet Rockstock in December.

The three bands tonight have proved that South Wales has some phenomenal talent coming through, Florence Black and Those Damn Crows both on the verge of big things. Glassholes although a fledgling band have potential. We urge you to check all these guys out
Last but not least the Patriot must have a special mention, for a small independent venue its set up is absolutely amazing. From the moment you step foot in the place the friendly staff make you welcome and the sound that they manage to produce is something that larger venues could learn from. South Wales has some great venues that need our support, so let’s keep it Live.
