THE VIRGINMARYS / FLORENCE BLACK / MAD HAVEN - Live Rooms, Chester 14.02.19

Until recently there were two Live Room venues in the Wrexham and Chester area. Sadly, the Wrexham venue closed two weeks ago after providing a live music outlet for twenty years, for the most part under the Central Station banner before changing the name last year. The Chester Live Rooms continues to trade and hopefully will do for years to come. If it can continue to produce Stella triple billing gigs like tonight’s you would hope that it’s future is assured. First band tonight is MAD HAVEN who I saw for the first time last November, at the aforementioned Live Rooms Wrexham, when they supported MASSIVE WAGONS and ‘THOSE DAMN CROWS. They more than held their own that night and do the same this evening. This young Welsh band, formed in 2011, set the bar high, rock like seasoned veterans and soon have the early arrivers on their side. Their all too short set is delivered at a blistering pace comprising of tracks from their first two releases and finishing with two new numbers ‘We are Fighting’ and ‘Alive’ from their soon to be released third EP. These numbers are two of the strongest in their set and point to a promising future for this superb young band.
If you see MAD HAVEN billed as a support band get to the gig early. You won’t be disappointed.
Tom Rogowski: Guitar & Vocals
Joe Fisher: Bass & backing vocals
Alex Rogowski: Drums & backing vocals

The second Welsh trio of the evening, FLORENCE BLACK, arrive on stage in explosive style and as their wall of sound reverberates around the room, the Chester faithful give them their seal of approval by head-banging away to their set-list peppered with numbers from their three EPs all dispensed with attitude and precision.
The crowd are familiar with many of the numbers and duly show their appreciation. The final song ‘Breadfan’ a cover of fellow welsh rockers, BUDGIE, sees all members of the band showcasing their individual talents with some style. Blistering guitars, pounding bass and hostile drumming.
The band went down a storm at the Merch stall too where their latest EP, ‘The Final EP’, sold out!
Florence Black are:
Tristan Thomas Lead Guitar and Vocals
Perry Davies – Drums
Fozzi – Bass

With numbers from their superb 2018 crowd funded ‘Northern Sun Sessions’ album featuring heavily THE VIRGINMARYS have the Chester Crowd bouncing from the opening song. The blues infused ‘Get Me Back Home’ features Ally Dickaty’s rasping vocals and sublime slide guitar accompanied by Dany Dolan’s fiercely aggressive drumming style that sets the tone for the next 90 minutes.
The set intertwines the ‘Northern Sun’ tracks with earlier releases but it’s a testament to the latest album that the audience appreciate newer numbers as much as the older tracks.
In an evening of highlights, they take their set to another level with a scorching rendition of their next single, ‘S.O.S.4.U.N.I.’ which is delivered with a mixed air of anxiety and aggression and another thunderous drumming sequence that has, even the sit down at the side of room, audience members taking to the floor and joining in on the chorus lines.
The ‘Northern Sun Sessions’ is an album without fillers and the same can be said for THE VIRGINMARYS live set. No long-winded deviations, no bum notes, no over-extended songs just solid rock n roll delivered with attitude and energy.
Next dates with support from Florence Black:
Ally Dickaty - Guitar/Vocals
Danny Dolan - Drums
‘Northern Sun Sessions’ is out now
