The Tivoli in Buckley has a rich history and over the years such esteemed bands as Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin in the early 70s and Oasis in the 90s have graced the stage of this wonderful venue. With a current capacity of 900 it is big enough to accommodate emerging acts but still gives you a feeling of intimacy and with good vantage points to see the performers up close. A warm welcome is assured from management and staff with a good choice beers and spirits it has all the hallmarks of great night out.
As well as spirits of the drinking variety the Tiv, as it’s known locally, is also famous for being haunted and holds regular ghost hunts with optional sleep overs.
The venue, then, is very fitting for tonight’s artists who all deliver rock music that is a little out of the ordinary. First up its FOOTPRINTS IN THE CUSTARD hosted many bands over the years, he
It’ sub-zero in North Wales and the pavements are coated in a thick layer of ice. The hardy souls who have braved the elements and arrived early are rewarded by a totally bonkers, performance from the “Comedy Punk Metal” band FOOTPRINTS IN THE CUSTARD. If the name of the band doesn’t tell you what this group are about it soon becomes blatantly obvious as they work through their set-list that includes ‘Wankclaw’, ‘Willies are for Weeing’ and ‘Gail Platter’, a song about the Coronation Street character (Gail Platt) who becomes the ingredients of a meal. Mid-set they announce “this is where we take off our clothes”. At any normal gig, you would think that this is a wind up but with this bunch anything is possible and although they don’t go all the way they change into alternative clothes that involve fairy dresses and a minimalist leotard. It’s defies description. Just check out the photos below!
They complete their set with the Weather Girls’ ‘It’s Raining Men’ with lead singer Russ orchestrating dubious audience participation. Set over, they make their way to merch stand where they continue to entertain audience members for the rest of the evening. It should be said that the band are not just about comedy. The music rocks too and Punk Metal is a fair description of what they do. Check out their Facebook page for details of future gigs. One to watch out for is the North Wales “Pentre Fest” on 22 and 23 of February when they headline on Friday.

Despite the freezing temperatures TEN FOOT WIZARD continue to bring a surreal feel to proceeding by taking to the stage in various forms of beach wear. Their 40-minute set comprises a mix of rock and blues-laden riffs intertwined with metal breaks. They don’t take themselves too seriously and they are never too far away from breaking into humour as is evidenced by songs such as ‘Namaste (I Bow To You) Dickhead’ and affectionately informing the crowd ‘I Bet Butter Wouldn’t Melt In Your Arse’
The band deliver a tight set of music that evidences their key influences including Clutch, Sabbath and King Crimson all delivered to the accompaniment of growling vocals.
Although they have been more conventional than ‘Footprints’ they deliver their final and trademark song ‘Covered In Tits’. With the lead-singer Gary seemingly singing into a microphone in the shape of a heron while high kicking on the edge of the stage ensuring that the evening stays on the other side of ordinary.

EVIL SCARECROW take to the stage in the knowledge that not all ticket holders could make their way to the venue because of the adverse weather conditions. This doesn’t stop the band delivering a set packed with humour, theatre and blistering deliveries of tracks from their latest album ‘Chapter IV: Antartarctica’ and crowd favourites from earlier albums. Commencing with ‘Way to Die’ and ‘Skulls of our Enemies’ they set off at a scorching pace that is rapturously received by the Buckley Crowd leaving Dr Hell to enthuse “It’s not the size of the audience ……. it’s the quality of the audience ......and you lot are amazing”.
Throughout the evening the band are joined at various points of the set by an assortment of flying saucers, mythical beasts, spacemen, elves, robots and as a special addition for the Welsh audience, inflatable sheep. It all sounds more like zany cabaret act than a rock show, but their one-and-a-half-hour set is skillfully coordinated to produce a well-balanced mix of humour and excellent musicianship all orchestrated by Dr Rabid Hell who leads proceedings with humour dexterity and precision.
The ten-minute epic ‘Antartartica’, ‘Red Riding Hood’ and ‘Space Dementia’ are lapped up and interspersed with crowd banter as they work their way through their ninety-minute set. Interaction with the crowd is key to the success of this show and audience participation takes many forms, the highlights being the robot moves to ‘Robototron’ and the trade mark ‘Crabulon’ that sees the Buckley faithful scuttling in an un-synchronised manner across the Tivoli floor.
The encores feature ‘Polterghost’ and ‘Hurricanado’ and see TEN FOOT WIZARD, who have obviously formed a bond with the Scarecrows, now dressed as pieces of fruit, joining them on stage “for the last time on this tour” to complete a great evening of inspired rock music with a weird twist.
The tour is over now and the next scheduled concert for EVIL SCARECROW is the Main Stage at Bloodstock on Saturday August 10th.
