Polish Prog Rockers RIVERSIDE bring their 2019 Wasteland Tour to Leeds and we at Down The Front Media could not resist coming along to show our support. Stylus was the venue for a night of Prog goodness. Support on the UK leg of the tour is LESOIR.
Hailing from The Netherlands this Dutch, five-piece Prog Rock band, were first up on stage. Even with the 10pm curfew, thus an early onstage time for a support act, there was already quite a crowd assembled to watch. As is a regular occurrence, in smaller venues, the band had little room on the stage with the drummer way over stage left. This however did not deter the band and they delivered a consummate set of Prog Rock music, which also included the pleasing sounds of a flute, to a very enthusiastic crowd.
As is the problem with a quality support act, they seemed barely to have got going and the set was finished. LESOIR have the key ingredients to do well, in this genre of music, and the potential of seeing a full-length show is one you should keep an eye out for.
Next up are main act and Polish Prog Rock supremo’s, RIVERSIDE. Continuing on from their successful 2018 Wasteland Tour the band continue to grow in stature and popularity. The Stylus is full, with the band walking onstage to rapturous applause from the eagerly awaiting crowd.
The houselights fade and the band slide into the opening number of the night, ‘Acid Rain’, which grips the audience with its quality delivery. Singer and bassist, Mariusz, declares that they will be playing a full and comprehensive set taken from across all of their studio albums with the cheer from the crowd showing this a popular decision.
The band are better than ever in delivery and synchronicity of music on stage tonight. There are smiles between all four touring members, throughout the set, with a visible bond between them all ensuring that the crowd are indeed delivered a quality night of music.
A third and most thoughtful element to a RIVERSIDE concert is that they bring a whole set of lighting on tour with them. This is best viewed a few meters back from the stage and does not disappoint. Clearly thought out and very well synchronised with the music, this extra dynamic is something that perfectly accompanies the quality musicianship on show tonight.
The set, as promised, does indeed cover their quality back catalogue and current offering ‘Wasteland’. Sublime moments including the likes of ‘Vale Of Tears’, ‘Guardian Angel’ and ‘Loose Heart’ simply assist this powerfully delivered set to its end with ‘Wasteland’. The night finishes with the encore closing tune of ‘River Down Below’, which closes to a rapturous round of applause and cheering from the appreciative crowd.
Concert over, the crowd slowly file out of the Stylus and into Leeds with the ever present positive chatter about RIVERSIDE not too far away.
