The night kicks off with SLOWHANDCLAP from Manchester. Describing themselves as Alternative/Noise Rock/Post Punk they deliver a powerful half hour set of self-penned numbers. Featuring Sam Bullock’s searing guitar and strong vocals complimented by solid rhythm section of Dan Coleman on Bass and Michael Duckworth on drums.

The band are strong on catchy riffs layered with rich melodies and a pounding beat. The stand out song for me was their single release ‘Never Home’ which is an indication of how promising a talent this fine young band is. This is a solid, but all too short, set that is well received by the Deaf Centre audience.

SLOWHANDCLAP is a tight unit who have already had considerable exposure via ‘BBC Introducing’ and a string of shows in their native Manchester. They have plenty of other gigs in the pipeline including:

25 May Peer Hat Manchester

31 May Night People Manchester

23 June Heelsapalooza Middlesbrough

Post Garage Punk outfit BLEACH BODY are the second band tonight, again based in Manchester, who open their 30-minute set with the potent ‘Diamond’ which is a statement of intent for what is to follow. Powerful vocals with a considerable range that extends to a screeching shout intertwined with a powerful guitar sound that veers between punk, grunge and surf rock. This shows considerable versatility and for the most part works to good effect. On occasions the sound is becomes a little too distorted, but that’s a minor issue.

There is a strong chemistry on-stage between all three members with vocalist / guitarist Ioanna and skilful bass man Lukey Luke forging a solid partnership up front along with newbie drummer Adrian who gives a powerful performance. It was only announced before that last number that this was his first gig with the band.  He nailed it.

The set finishes strongly with ‘Place in the Sun’ referencing Ionna’s homeland of Greece and ‘Western Books’ that more than meets with the approval of the audience.

2nd June  - Astral  Elevator Manchester
