WHISKEY MYERS - O2 Academy Institute, Birmingham 22.05.19

TERRY MARLAND

WHISKEY MYERS have become regular visitors to the UK bringing with them their unique blend of Southern Rock. I first saw the band supporting THE CADILLAC THREE in January 2016 when they delivered a barnstorming set on the back of the ‘Early Morning Shakes’ album. Now, with four albums under their belt and another in the mix they are firmly established as fine exponents of the Southern Rock genre with a growing UK fan base.

Due to delays in traffic and other factors that convinced me that the Gig Gods were against me I didn’t arrive until 8:30 pm and unfortunately missed the opening act THE IMBICILES.

The roots of WHISKEY MYERS go back to 2007 when Cody's Cannon and Tate, together with John Jeffers formed LUCKY SOUTHERN that later blossomed into WHISKEY MYERS. Frontman Cannon regards the group as a family and there is obviously a strong on-stage camaraderie with band members alternating spotlight time during their accomplished 1hour 45 minutes set.

Opening with ‘Frogman’, ‘On the River’ and ‘Deep Down in the South’ the bar is set high with superb vocals from Cannon and stellar duelling guitar interchanges between Jeffers and Tate. Cannon is happy to let the music do the talking and interacts with the crowd throughout by sharing an endless supply of plectrums and encouraging the audience, not that they needed it, to join in on ‘Early Morning Shakes’ and ‘Ballad of a Southern Man’ to name but two.

A blistering version of ‘Home’ is rapturously received by the audience and in particular the antics of percussionist Tony Kent who momentarily takes centre stage on this one.

New songs ‘Gasoline’ and the foot-stomping ‘Bitch’ are enticing tasters from the forthcoming album with Jeffers demonstrating his considerable vocal talents on the latter. Tate takes to the microphone for ‘Cut from a Different Mold’ which also showcases the extensive musicianship of both guitarists.

The night concludes with a scorching cover of NEIL YOUNG’s ‘Rockin’ in the Free World’ which again has the audience rocking and sends them home more than satisfied customers.
