Tonight’s show is anticipated to be one to remember. ROB ZOMBIE is in Glasgow and will be taking to the stage very soon! Unless you’ve been living under a rock you’ll be aware that as well as being a highly successful musician, Mr. Zombie has established himself as a major player on the horror film circuit, having triumphed with producing and directing films such as: ‘House of 1000 Corpses’, ‘The Devils’ Rejects’, the remake of ‘Halloween’ and the much anticipated ‘3 From Hell’ starring his wife Sherri Moon and frequent collaborators: Sid Haig, Bill Moseley, Richard Break and the legend that is Danny Trejo.
The support for tonight is SKYND, a band whom have drawn inspiration from horror and serial killers with songs such as: ‘Garry Ridgeway’ ‘Richard Ramirez’ and ‘Jim Jones’. Korn’s frontman Jonathan Davis has been working with band which gives them another level of coolness, given Jonathan’s pedigree in both music, ‘serial killer culture’ and ‘Murderabilia’, he’s clearly the best qualified person to work with this astonishing band.
The lighting for SKYND is dark with harsh up-lighting illuminating the singer’s face. She moves and twists in time to the music, hands outstretched looking like a scarecrow from ‘The Damned’. The music is loud, powerful and catchy as hell! SKYND is one band to keep an eye on. I’m sure you’ll be hearing more about them in the near future. The SKYND performed as a three-piece and certainly got tongues wagging after the show as social media lit up with people enquiring who this band were and where they came from.
The moment that everyone was waiting for - ROB ZOMBIE is about to walk onto the stage. The opening song for tonight is ‘Meet the Creeper’ from the 1998 album ‘Hillbilly Deluxe’. The band storms the stage to enormous applause. Rob is a sea of dreadlocks and tassels hanging from his jacket and boots. He thrashes around looking like a pogoing Predator. John 5, standing to Rob’s left, is playing his Fender Telecaster, looking like a marionette as he moves in slow robotic bursts as his eyes scan the crowd from behind his mask.
A red wash of light floods over Count D, his metallic mask draws your attention and sucks you right in. Their stage presence is awesome! Ginger Fish is really hard to see from where I am standing in the pit as there is a stage that has been built on top of the usual stage. The band can only be seen by myself when they stand close to the edge of the double-stacked stage.
The stage lighting is dramatic, and the band are flooded in colour washes of red, green and purple. During the first three songs the only neutral white lighting is mostly on John 5 who eventually takes off his mask to reveal another mask, looking like Skeletor from He-Man. John 5 hangs the mask on his Telecaster’s head stock and plays on. The whole auditorium is plunged into darkness, the only spec of light is omitting from John 5’s guitar - his custom Fender Telecaster. John holds the guitar below his face, allowing the glow to illuminate his grin. The crowd go wild!
We are treated to ‘Superbeast’ and ‘Everyone’s Fucking in a UFO’, both classic Zombie songs! It is amazing to hear these played live with such accuracy and panache! Other highlights are ‘More Human Than Human’, ‘House of 1000 corpses’ and of course ‘Dragula’!
The bass playing vamp, ‘Mathew Montgomery’, AKA ‘Piggy D’ is wearing amazing attire. His metallic looking mask looks fearsome and draws you right in. He looks like a villain from some superhero film; I was expecting Spiderman to swing down at any moment! The staging was superb, and the band had frequent costume and guitar changes too. Rob, John 5, Piggy D and Ginger Fish played an outstanding performance, a warm up to Download, the largest U.K. event they will play.
This show delivered everything my imagination hoped it would. These four stellar musicians kicked Glasgow’s ass then gave us a big hug! Please come back again soon! Stay creepy folks!
