Tonight is all about local bands as FEAR LIES head up a triple header of local, Sheffield talent, at the O2 Academy to celebrate the release of their brand new single ‘Rain’.

First on stage are INTO THE RED who are, amusingly self-promoted as an “alternative rock band from Sheffield, our music will save the world”. This four-piece tear into their short set with no announcement or fanfare. The songs are upbeat, well thought out and delivered exceptionally well.

The drums and bass are solid, with a superb mix of rhythm and lead guitar that are dressed up with some fine vocal talent.

With the tight sound and musicianship, it is quite a surprise to hear announced that they are missing their regular bass player and have a stand-in for the evening. The four are at ease on the stage and look to believe in what they are delivering to the decent crowd, already within the O2.

Confidence is a good thing and the band continue to tear through their set, let the music do the talking for them and all too soon it’s over. We could and should see plenty more of this band in the years to come.

Into The Red are:-

Logan Macdonald – Crooning / Groan Box
Josh "Tower of Flesh" Douglass - Rhythm scratchboard
Callum Mitchell - The low end
Ash Martindale - Thump thump thump doosh!

Up next are three-piece rock outfit SILVERJET. With three albums behind them and some extensive touring support slots, to some big industry names, these guys deliver exactly what you would hope to see.

From the first note, they are metaphorically on fire as a band. The onstage energy is being thrown about by the bucketload, complemented by a solid bone-crunching sound which kicks you hard and low.

Both Pais & Dave, bassist and guitarist respectively, barely stand still for the entire set. This front-line energy is well supported by Alex on drums who lays down a solid beat for the lads.

The whole sound is solid, fast, frenetic rock, full of excellent tunes, riffs and an onstage enthusiasm rarely seen throughout an entire band. Again, it is all over too soon and the rapturous applause from the now swelling crowd confirms their set a success.

It’s excellent to see such quality as a support act though I was definitely left wanting to see a full headline set at some point in the future.

Now we reach our headline act of the evening. FEAR LIES won’t mind me saying, in fact, they alluded to it themselves, that they have been around a while and with that time comes experience and craftmanship of such events.

A low light intro, with just two band banners illuminated, before the band emerge from stage left and right to rapturous applause from the crowd. Having not seen the band live myself, this reception was enough to tell me that this should be good.

On stage, the band are almost at one with each other. The sound is balanced, together and delivered with a true belief in themselves. There are smiles aplenty whilst they interact with the crowd and indeed amongst themselves whilst delivering a solid set of rock music.

My esteemed colleague, Maria Glover, at DTFM mentioned “stadium-quality rock with anthemic choruses” whilst reviewing the new Fear Lies single ‘Rain’. This analogy of the single would perfectly sum up what I was observing tonight.

It wasn’t just good, it was an excellent, superb, monstrous display and delivery of musicianship and music.

The set consisted of thirteen songs. The crowd absorbed each and every one like dry sponges before erupting in applause and gratitude between them.

The night was held to promote the new single ‘Rain’ which it did superbly, yet the evening also showed why FEAR LIES are a band to be reckoned with onstage.

FEAR LIES have a new, as yet untitled, EP in the pipeline. Hopefully, this will prompt another night of live music when it arrives.

Fear Lies are:-

Ben Orrah – Guitar / Vocals
Dan Eades - Bass
Tim McNeill – Guitar
Jim Hockney - Drums
