FAHRAN - Pyre (Single)
Nottingham based alternative rock/metal five-piece FAHRAN unleashed their latest single ‘Pyre’ on 14th March 2019. The song is taken from their new album ‘V-A-P-O-U-R-S’, which is due to be unleashed on 28th June 2019, and the lyrics are centred on the subject of anxiety. Bassist Josh Ballantyne explained that ‘Pyre’ is one of two songs the band wrote during the second half of 2017 to add to their live set as a way of introducing new material. He says, “Grounding on feedback from earlier work, we took care to explore fully the simple riff on which ‘Pyre’ is based. Working around a ‘theme and variation’ structure, ‘Pyre’ offers energetic ideas combined with tight rhythmical syncopation”.
‘Pyre’ is just as Josh describes; the simple riff around which the song is based introduces the song and then builds from the start as crashing cymbals announce drummer Josh Fahran’s arrival. A heady drum beat kicks in, Joshua Ballantyne’s rumbling bass drives the song forward and Matt Black’s powerful yet emotive vocal joins in with the line “Watch as I burn tonight, I cry out but don’t make a sound”.
That addictive riff is kept going as Jake Graham and fellow guitarist Chris Byrne trade off melodious soaring licks while the vocals are belted out. Interspersed are beautifully tender interludes with heartfelt lyrics, “You know that it’s all in your mind, just step outside”, before the invigorating rhythm takes off again.
Although this is a song which does a fantastic job of painting a picture of how the mind works when in an intense state of anxiety, its robust delivery and polished yet raw performance means that it feels uplifting. It’s a song you could repeatedly listen to and not tire of; there’s also a pretty good accompanying video here:- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HSP9QlvuVvw
FAHRAN played Planet Rock’s Winter’s End Festival at the beginning of March, where I witnessed the guys wowing audiences and they are fresh from Hard Rock Hell AOR stage, where they went down a storm. The band are just about to embark on a nine date tour across the UK with SKARLETT RIOT, and with ‘V-A-P-O-U-R-S’ due out in June and more announcements due later in the year, it seems the fire is well and truly lit for FAHRAN.
